Effect of Problem-Based Learning on Students’ Understanding of Clinical Anatomy
Abstract
The study examines the effect of problem-based learning on students’ understanding of clinical anatomy, with emphasis on how the use of structured clinical problems may improve students’ ability to connect anatomical knowledge with clinical conditions and practical healthcare situations. Clinical anatomy requires students to understand not only the location and relationships of body structures but also their relevance to physical examination, diagnosis, injury, and clinical procedures. Problem-based learning may encourage active participation, independent reasoning, and integration of anatomical knowledge in clinically meaningful contexts. The study will assess the effect of problem-based learning on students’ understanding of clinical anatomy. The specific objectives will include determining students’ level of clinical anatomy knowledge before exposure to problem-based learning, assessing their understanding after the intervention, comparing the performance of students exposed to problem-based learning with those receiving conventional instruction, and identifying areas of clinical anatomy that remain difficult for students to understand. The study will also assess students’ ability to relate anatomical structures to selected clinical presentations and procedures. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students studying human anatomy or related health science courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to relevant study groups. Data will be collected using standardized clinical anatomy knowledge tests, problem-based questions, anatomical diagrams, and practical or image-based assessment tasks administered before and after the intervention. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to determine differences in students’ clinical anatomy performance. The study is expected to reveal improved understanding of clinical anatomy among students exposed to problem-based learning. Students may demonstrate better ability to identify clinically relevant anatomical structures, explain structural relationships, and apply anatomical knowledge to clinical problems compared with students receiving conventional instruction. However, complex anatomical regions, closely related structures, and clinical problems involving multiple anatomical systems may remain challenging for some students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, curriculum planners, and health science educators involved in undergraduate clinical anatomy teaching. The study may provide evidence on the value of problem-based learning in promoting active understanding and practical application of anatomical knowledge. It may also support the incorporation of structured clinical problems, guided discussions, collaborative learning, and anatomical reasoning activities into clinical anatomy education. The study will conclude by determining the effect of problem-based learning on students’ understanding of clinical anatomy. It is recommended that problem-based learning should be integrated appropriately with conventional anatomy teaching, practical sessions, anatomical specimens, models, and imaging resources to strengthen students’ clinical understanding of human anatomy. Further studies involving larger student populations and longer follow-up periods are recommended to determine the sustained educational value of problem-based learning in clinical anatomy education.
