Effect of Reflective Dissection Reports on Students’ Understanding of Regional Anatomy

Abstract

The study examines the effect of reflective dissection reports on students’ understanding of regional anatomy. Reflective dissection reports provide students with an opportunity to document their observations during dissection, describe identified anatomical structures, explain structural relationships, and reflect on areas of difficulty encountered during practical sessions. This approach may encourage students to actively process their observations and connect practical dissection experiences with theoretical knowledge of regional anatomy. The study will assess the effect of reflective dissection reports on students’ understanding of regional anatomy. The specific objectives will include determining students’ level of understanding of regional anatomy before the intervention, implementing structured reflective dissection reports during practical sessions, assessing students’ understanding after the intervention, and comparing the performance of students who use reflective dissection reports with those who receive conventional practical instruction. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to an intervention group exposed to structured reflective dissection reporting and a comparison group receiving conventional practical instruction. Data will be collected using standardized regional anatomy assessments and a structured questionnaire on students’ learning experiences. The assessments will cover identification of anatomical structures, anatomical relationships, regional organization, landmarks, and interpretation of dissection observations. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistics will be used to determine differences between the groups. The study is expected to reveal differences in students’ understanding of regional anatomy following the use of reflective dissection reports. Students who participate in structured reporting are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of regional relationships, anatomical landmarks, and the arrangement of structures within specific body regions through repeated observation, documentation, and reflection. However, students may continue to experience difficulties when dealing with complex regions containing numerous closely related structures or when specimens present variations or limitations in visibility. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum planners, and institutional administrators. The study may provide useful information on the potential value of reflective dissection reports as a practical learning strategy for strengthening students’ understanding of regional anatomy. It may also support the integration of structured reflective activities into dissection-based teaching to encourage students to critically review their practical observations and identify areas requiring further study. The study will conclude by determining the effect of reflective dissection reports on students’ understanding of regional anatomy. It is recommended that appropriately structured reflective reports should be incorporated into dissection-based anatomy teaching to promote observation, documentation, reflection, and integration of practical and theoretical knowledge, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of reflective reporting in regional anatomy education.
