Effect of Reflective Practical Journaling on Students’ Understanding of Anatomy

Abstract

The study examines the effect of reflective practical journaling on students’ understanding of anatomy. Reflective practical journaling provides students with an opportunity to document their practical experiences, describe anatomical observations, identify areas of difficulty, and reflect on how practical activities contribute to their understanding of anatomical structures and relationships. This approach may encourage active engagement with practical learning and help students connect theoretical knowledge with observations made during anatomy laboratory sessions. The study will assess the effect of reflective practical journaling on students’ understanding of anatomy. The specific objectives will include determining students’ level of anatomical understanding before the intervention, implementing structured reflective journaling during practical anatomy sessions, assessing students’ understanding following the intervention, and comparing the learning outcomes of students who participate in reflective journaling with those who receive conventional practical instruction. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to an intervention group exposed to structured reflective practical journaling and a comparison group receiving conventional practical instruction. Data will be collected using standardized anatomy assessments and a structured questionnaire on students’ learning experiences. The assessment will cover anatomical structure identification, anatomical relationships, terminology, and interpretation of practical observations. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistics will be used to determine differences between the groups. The study is expected to reveal differences in students’ understanding of anatomy following the use of reflective practical journaling. Students who participate in reflective journaling are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of anatomical structures, relationships, and practical observations through repeated consideration of their learning experiences. The reflective process may also help students identify areas of difficulty and develop more organized approaches to practical anatomy learning, although some complex or unfamiliar anatomical structures may remain challenging. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum planners, and institutional administrators. The study may provide useful information on the potential value of reflective journaling as an instructional strategy for improving students’ engagement with practical anatomy and strengthening the connection between theoretical and practical knowledge. It may also support the incorporation of structured reflective activities into anatomy practical sessions where appropriate. The study will conclude by determining the effect of reflective practical journaling on students’ understanding of anatomy. It is recommended that reflective journaling should be appropriately structured and incorporated into practical anatomy teaching to encourage observation, documentation, reflection, and active engagement with anatomical learning experiences, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate its effectiveness over longer periods.
