Effect of Senior Student Demonstration on Junior Students’ Practical Anatomy Skills

Abstract

The study examines the effect of senior student demonstration on junior students’ practical anatomy skills. Senior students who have acquired greater practical experience may provide demonstrations that help junior students observe appropriate procedures, identify anatomical structures, recognize important landmarks, and understand relationships between structures. This approach may provide additional opportunities for practical learning and may complement formal demonstrations conducted by anatomy instructors. The study will assess the effect of senior student demonstration on junior students’ practical anatomy skills. The specific objectives will include determining junior students’ baseline practical anatomy skills, exposing them to structured demonstrations conducted by trained senior students, assessing their practical skills following the intervention, and comparing the performance of students exposed to senior student demonstrations with those receiving conventional practical instruction. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Junior undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to an intervention group exposed to structured demonstrations by trained senior students and a comparison group receiving conventional practical instruction. The demonstrations will focus on anatomical structure identification, recognition of landmarks, specimen observation, appropriate handling of practical materials, and interpretation of anatomical relationships. Data will be collected using standardized practical anatomy assessments and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistics will be used to determine differences between the groups. The study is expected to reveal differences in practical anatomy skills between junior students exposed to senior student demonstrations and those receiving conventional practical instruction. Students who participate in the demonstrations are expected to demonstrate improved structure identification, practical observation, recognition of anatomical landmarks, and understanding of structural relationships. However, some students may continue to experience difficulties with small, deep, closely related, damaged, or visually similar anatomical structures. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, senior students, junior students, medical educators, curriculum planners, and institutional administrators. The study may provide useful information on the potential contribution of structured senior-to-junior demonstrations to practical anatomy education. It may also support the development of supervised peer-assisted learning activities that provide junior students with additional opportunities to observe, practice, ask questions, and receive practical guidance. The study will conclude by determining the effect of senior student demonstration on junior students’ practical anatomy skills. It is recommended that senior student demonstrations should be appropriately structured and supervised by anatomy educators to ensure that practical procedures and anatomical information presented to junior students are accurate and consistent with established teaching standards. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of senior student demonstration in practical anatomy education.
