Effect of Surface Anatomy Demonstration on Students’ Clinical Examination Skills
Abstract
The study examines the effect of surface anatomy demonstration on students’ clinical examination skills, with emphasis on how practical demonstration of external anatomical landmarks can improve students’ ability to apply anatomical knowledge during basic clinical examination procedures. Surface anatomy provides an important link between theoretical anatomical knowledge and the physical examination of patients by helping students locate bones, muscles, joints, vessels, and other underlying structures through visible and palpable surface features. Effective demonstration may therefore improve students’ confidence, accuracy, and practical application of anatomical knowledge. The study will assess students’ clinical examination skills before and after exposure to structured surface anatomy demonstrations. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline ability to identify relevant surface landmarks, demonstrating selected landmarks and their relationship with underlying anatomical structures, assessing students’ clinical examination skills following the demonstrations, and comparing their performance before and after the intervention. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique and exposed to structured surface anatomy demonstrations covering selected clinically relevant regions of the body. Demonstrations will involve identification of surface landmarks, explanation of underlying structures, guided observation, palpation where appropriate, and application of the landmarks during basic clinical examination procedures. Data will be collected using standardized practical assessment tools and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied to determine changes in performance. The study is expected to reveal improvement in students’ ability to identify surface landmarks, relate external features to underlying anatomical structures, and apply this knowledge during clinical examination activities following the demonstrations. Students may demonstrate better performance in examining regions with prominent and easily identifiable landmarks, while areas involving deeper, less distinct, or closely related structures may remain more challenging. Improvements in confidence and accuracy during practical examination tasks may also be observed. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, clinical skills instructors, medical students, physiotherapy students, nursing students, and other healthcare trainees involved in physical examination. The study may provide evidence on the usefulness of practical surface anatomy demonstrations in strengthening the connection between anatomical knowledge and clinical examination skills. It may also help educators identify areas where additional demonstrations, supervised practice, models, or guided palpation activities are required. The study will conclude by determining the effect of structured surface anatomy demonstration on students’ clinical examination skills. It is recommended that surface anatomy demonstrations should be incorporated systematically into anatomy and clinical skills training, with adequate opportunities for supervised practical application and feedback. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to establish the effectiveness of surface anatomy demonstrations across different areas of clinical examination.
