Effect of Virtual Dissection on Students’ Practical Anatomy Knowledge

Abstract

The study assesses the effect of virtual dissection on students’ practical anatomy knowledge. Virtual dissection provides students with computer-based representations of anatomical structures that can be explored through digital dissection, manipulation, sectional viewing, and three-dimensional visualization. The use of virtual dissection may provide additional opportunities for students to examine anatomical structures, understand their spatial relationships, and reinforce practical anatomy knowledge alongside conventional learning approaches. The study will assess the effect of virtual dissection on students’ practical anatomy knowledge. The specific objectives will include determining students’ practical anatomy knowledge before exposure to virtual dissection, assessing their practical anatomy knowledge after the intervention, examining students’ ability to identify anatomical structures using virtual dissection resources, and assessing students’ perceptions of virtual dissection as a practical anatomy learning method. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to relevant study groups where applicable. Data will be collected using a practical anatomy knowledge assessment administered before and after exposure to virtual dissection, together with an appropriately structured questionnaire for assessing students’ perceptions of the learning approach. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate comparative inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to show differences in students’ practical anatomy knowledge following exposure to virtual dissection. Students may demonstrate improved ability to identify anatomical structures, recognize spatial relationships, interpret different anatomical views, and visualize three-dimensional arrangements after the intervention. Variations may also be observed in students’ perceptions of the accessibility, clarity, usefulness, and ease of use of virtual dissection as a practical anatomy learning resource. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum developers, and institutions involved in health sciences training. The study may provide information on the potential contribution of virtual dissection to practical anatomy education and help identify areas where digital resources can complement specimen-based teaching. It may also support the development of blended learning approaches that combine virtual anatomical exploration with conventional practical anatomy activities. The study will conclude by assessing the effect of virtual dissection on students’ practical anatomy knowledge and determining its potential contribution to anatomy learning. It is recommended that virtual dissection resources should be appropriately integrated into practical anatomy teaching alongside conventional specimens, models, and demonstrations where available. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and longer intervention periods are also recommended.
