Practical Study of Surface Landmarks Used in Clinical Joint Examination

Abstract

The study examines the surface landmarks used in clinical joint examination, with emphasis on the identification, location, and anatomical relevance of external landmarks that assist in the assessment of joints. Surface landmarks provide important reference points for locating bones, joint spaces, tendons, muscles, and other structures during physical examination. Knowledge of these landmarks is therefore essential for undergraduate students developing practical anatomy and clinical examination skills. The study will focus on selected clinically important joints and their associated surface landmarks, including landmarks of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle regions. The specific objectives will include identifying major surface landmarks used during joint examination, determining students’ ability to locate these landmarks accurately, relating the landmarks to underlying anatomical structures, and documenting common difficulties encountered during practical identification. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through practical identification exercises, structured observation checklists, anatomical models, diagrams, and other appropriate teaching materials. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability among students in identifying and relating surface landmarks to the corresponding joint structures. Students may demonstrate better recognition of prominent and easily accessible landmarks, while landmarks associated with deeper, less prominent, or closely related structures may present greater difficulty. Differences may also be observed in students’ ability to apply surface landmark knowledge to the systematic examination of different joints. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, clinical instructors, medical students, physiotherapy students, radiography students, and other healthcare professionals involved in physical examination and musculoskeletal assessment. The study may provide useful information on students’ practical understanding of surface anatomy and highlight areas where additional practical demonstrations, models, palpation exercises, and guided clinical examination activities may improve anatomical orientation. The study will conclude by documenting the practical identification of surface landmarks relevant to clinical joint examination and their relationship with underlying anatomical structures. It is recommended that surface anatomy practicals should be systematically integrated into anatomy and clinical skills training, with adequate use of anatomical models, supervised demonstrations, and practical identification exercises. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on the acquisition of surface anatomy skills.
