Practical Study of Surface Landmarks Used in Regional Anaesthesia

Abstract

The study examines the surface landmarks used in regional anaesthesia, with emphasis on the practical identification and anatomical relevance of external landmarks that assist in locating appropriate sites for regional anaesthetic procedures. Accurate knowledge of surface anatomy is important in understanding the position of underlying nerves, muscles, bones, and other anatomical structures that serve as references during regional anaesthesia. Practical study of these landmarks may therefore strengthen students’ understanding of the relationship between surface features and deeper anatomical structures. The study will focus on selected clinically relevant regions and surface landmarks associated with common regional anaesthetic procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying important surface landmarks used as anatomical references during regional anaesthesia, determining students’ ability to locate these landmarks accurately, relating the landmarks to underlying anatomical structures, and documenting common difficulties encountered during practical identification. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through practical identification exercises, structured observation checklists, anatomical models, diagrams, and other appropriate teaching materials. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify selected landmarks and explain their anatomical relationships to relevant nerves and surrounding structures. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability among students in identifying surface landmarks relevant to regional anaesthesia. Students may demonstrate better recognition of prominent and easily accessible landmarks, while landmarks associated with deeper structures, less distinct anatomical features, or closely related structures may present greater difficulty. Variations in students’ ability to relate surface landmarks to the underlying anatomical pathways may also be observed. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anaesthetists, anatomy educators, clinical skills instructors, medical students, physiotherapy students, and other healthcare professionals involved in regional anaesthesia and clinical procedures. The study may provide useful information on students’ practical understanding of surface anatomy and may support the development of teaching activities that improve anatomical orientation and recognition of clinically important landmarks. The study will conclude by documenting the practical identification and anatomical relevance of surface landmarks used in regional anaesthesia. It is recommended that surface anatomy teaching should include structured practical demonstrations, anatomical models, supervised landmark identification, and appropriate clinical correlations to strengthen students’ understanding. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to provide broader anatomical reference information and evaluate the application of surface landmark knowledge in clinical training.
