Relationship Between Knowledge of Body Donation and Attitudes Toward Cadaveric Dissection

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between knowledge of body donation and students’ attitudes toward cadaveric dissection. Body donation provides an important source of human remains for anatomy education, allowing students to study the structure of the human body through direct observation and dissection. Students’ understanding of body donation, including the purpose, procedures, consent, ethical considerations, and contribution of donated bodies to medical education, may influence how they perceive and interact with cadaveric dissection. The study will assess students’ knowledge of body donation and their attitudes toward cadaveric dissection. The specific objectives will include determining students’ level of knowledge regarding body donation, assessing their attitudes toward cadaveric dissection, identifying common perceptions and concerns associated with the use of donated human bodies for anatomy education, and examining the relationship between knowledge of body donation and students’ attitudes toward cadaveric dissection. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire containing items on body donation knowledge, consent procedures, ethical considerations, educational purpose, confidentiality, respect for human remains, and students’ attitudes toward cadaveric dissection. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical test will be used to determine the relationship between knowledge of body donation and attitudes toward cadaveric dissection. The study is expected to reveal variations in students’ knowledge of body donation and their attitudes toward cadaveric dissection. Students with greater knowledge of the purpose and ethical principles of body donation are expected to demonstrate more informed and respectful attitudes toward cadaveric dissection. Limited knowledge may be associated with misconceptions, discomfort, fear, cultural concerns, or uncertainty regarding the use of donated human remains for educational purposes. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum planners, and institutional administrators involved in cadaver-based anatomy education. The study may provide useful information on the importance of educating students about body donation and the ethical foundations of cadaveric learning. The findings may also support the development of appropriate educational programmes that promote informed understanding, respect for human remains, and responsible participation in dissection activities. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between knowledge of body donation and students’ attitudes toward cadaveric dissection. It is recommended that anatomy education should include appropriate information on body donation, informed consent, ethical principles, confidentiality, and the educational value of donated human remains. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to provide broader evidence on students’ knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes toward body donation and cadaveric dissection.
