Forensic Accounting Techniques and Fraud Detection in Nigerian Deposit Money Banks

Abstract

Fraud has become one of the most persistent challenges confronting the banking industry, posing significant threats to financial stability, organizational performance, investor confidence, and public trust. The increasing adoption of digital banking technologies, electronic payment systems, internet banking, mobile banking, and financial technology (FinTech) has enhanced banking efficiency but has also created new opportunities for sophisticated financial fraud, cyber-enabled crimes, insider abuses, identity theft, money laundering, and financial statement manipulation. Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria continue to experience various forms of fraudulent activities, including electronic fraud, unauthorized fund transfers, loan fraud, account manipulation, cyberattacks, forgery, and internal control breaches, despite significant investments in fraud prevention and risk management systems. These fraudulent practices often result in substantial financial losses, reputational damage, regulatory sanctions, operational disruptions, and declining customer confidence. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for more proactive and specialized fraud detection approaches capable of identifying, investigating, and preventing complex financial crimes. Forensic accounting has emerged as an effective multidisciplinary approach that integrates accounting, auditing, investigative techniques, financial analysis, digital forensics, and legal procedures to detect, investigate, and prevent fraud. Forensic accounting techniques such as data mining, computer-assisted audit techniques (CAATs), Benford's Law analysis, ratio analysis, continuous auditing, digital forensic investigations, lifestyle audits, and forensic interviewing provide organizations with powerful tools for identifying suspicious financial transactions and strengthening internal control systems. Although previous studies have examined internal audit effectiveness and fraud prevention, empirical evidence regarding the influence of forensic accounting techniques on fraud detection in Nigerian Deposit Money Banks remains limited and inconclusive. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of forensic accounting techniques on fraud detection in Nigerian Deposit Money Banks. The study is anchored on the Fraud Triangle Theory, Fraud Diamond Theory, and the Routine Activity Theory. Fraud Triangle Theory posits that fraud occurs when pressure, opportunity, and rationalization coexist, while effective forensic accounting techniques help identify and reduce these conditions. Fraud Diamond Theory extends the Fraud Triangle by incorporating capability as an additional determinant of fraudulent behaviour, emphasizing the importance of specialized investigative expertise in detecting and preventing fraud. Routine Activity Theory explains that fraud is more likely to occur when motivated offenders encounter suitable targets in the absence of effective monitoring and capable guardianship; robust forensic accounting practices therefore serve as effective monitoring mechanisms that reduce opportunities for fraudulent activities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between forensic accounting techniques and fraud detection in Nigerian Deposit Money Banks. The study adopts a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to forensic accountants, internal auditors, external auditors, compliance officers, risk management officers, finance managers, accountants, cybersecurity specialists, fraud investigators, and other personnel responsible for fraud risk management within selected Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of respondents across accounting, audit, compliance, risk management, and information technology departments. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and perceptions regarding forensic accounting techniques and fraud detection. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the influence of forensic accounting techniques on fraud detection. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests, including multicollinearity assessment, common method bias analysis, and model fit indices such as the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), will be conducted to ensure the adequacy, consistency, reliability, and robustness of the structural model. The study anticipates that forensic accounting techniques will have a significant positive influence on fraud detection in Nigerian Deposit Money Banks. The application of forensic accounting techniques is expected to improve the early identification of fraudulent transactions, strengthen internal investigations, enhance evidence collection, and support successful fraud prosecution. Advanced analytical tools such as data analytics, continuous auditing, digital forensic investigations, anomaly detection, Benford's Law analysis, and computer-assisted audit techniques are anticipated to improve the detection of financial irregularities, unauthorized transactions, cyber fraud, and accounting manipulations. Furthermore, the integration of forensic accounting into internal control systems and enterprise risk management frameworks is expected to reduce fraud losses, improve regulatory compliance, strengthen corporate governance, and enhance stakeholder confidence. Deposit Money Banks that invest in forensic accounting capabilities are therefore expected to experience lower fraud incidence, improved operational efficiency, stronger financial integrity, enhanced customer trust, and greater institutional resilience. Conversely, inadequate forensic accounting expertise, weak investigative capacity, insufficient technological infrastructure, and ineffective internal control systems may reduce the effectiveness of fraud detection mechanisms and expose banks to greater financial and reputational risks. Consequently, strengthening forensic accounting practices is expected to contribute significantly to improving fraud detection, safeguarding financial assets, and promoting the stability of Nigeria's banking sector. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on forensic accounting, auditing, banking, and fraud risk management by providing robust evidence on the relationship between forensic accounting techniques and fraud detection in Nigerian Deposit Money Banks. Unlike previous studies that focused primarily on traditional auditing or internal control systems, this research provides a comprehensive evaluation of specialized forensic accounting techniques as strategic tools for fraud detection within the banking industry. The findings will provide valuable insights for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Deposit Money Banks, professional accounting bodies, regulators, policymakers, forensic accounting practitioners, and academic researchers regarding the strategic importance of forensic accounting in strengthening fraud detection and financial integrity. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing forensic accounting capacity, strengthening fraud investigation frameworks, improving internal control systems, expanding the use of digital forensic technologies, reinforcing regulatory compliance, and promoting sustainable fraud risk management within Nigeria's banking sector.
