Impact of Artificial Intelligence Adoption on Financial Reporting Quality of Listed Companies in Nigeria
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most disruptive technological innovations shaping modern accounting, finance, and corporate reporting practices. AI technologies—including machine learning, natural language processing, robotic process automation (RPA), intelligent data analytics, predictive analytics, and cognitive computing—are increasingly being integrated into accounting information systems to automate financial processes, enhance data analysis, improve internal controls, and support real-time financial reporting. The adoption of AI enables organizations to process large volumes of financial transactions with greater speed, accuracy, consistency, and reliability while reducing human error and improving decision-making. In recent years, the increasing digitalization of business operations, the growing complexity of financial reporting requirements, and heightened stakeholder demand for transparency have encouraged listed companies worldwide to invest in AI-driven accounting and financial reporting systems. In Nigeria, the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), digital transformation initiatives, and increased regulatory oversight by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) have accelerated the integration of advanced technologies into financial reporting processes. Nevertheless, concerns regarding financial reporting quality continue to persist due to issues such as earnings management, reporting delays, inadequate disclosures, accounting errors, weak internal controls, and information asymmetry. Artificial Intelligence offers significant potential to address these challenges by automating accounting processes, strengthening data integrity, enhancing fraud detection, improving compliance with accounting standards, and increasing the timeliness and credibility of financial statements. However, the successful implementation of AI remains constrained by challenges including high implementation costs, inadequate technological infrastructure, cybersecurity risks, shortage of skilled professionals, data privacy concerns, and organizational resistance to technological change. Although previous studies have examined accounting information systems and digital reporting technologies, empirical evidence on the impact of Artificial Intelligence adoption on the financial reporting quality of listed companies in Nigeria remains limited. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Artificial Intelligence adoption on the financial reporting quality of listed companies in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Resource-Based View (RBV), and the DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model. The Technology Acceptance Model explains that organizations adopt Artificial Intelligence technologies based on perceived usefulness and ease of use, which influence the effectiveness of accounting and financial reporting processes. The Resource-Based View posits that Artificial Intelligence represents a valuable organizational resource capable of enhancing operational efficiency, information quality, and sustainable competitive advantage. The DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model emphasizes that high-quality information systems improve system quality, information quality, user satisfaction, and organizational performance, thereby enhancing the quality of financial reporting. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between Artificial Intelligence adoption and financial reporting quality among listed companies in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to chief financial officers, finance managers, professional accountants, internal auditors, external auditors, financial controllers, information technology managers, and other personnel directly involved in financial reporting within selected listed companies in Nigeria. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of companies across the banking, manufacturing, oil and gas, telecommunications, consumer goods, industrial goods, agriculture, insurance, healthcare, and services sectors. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and perceptions regarding AI adoption and financial reporting quality. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the impact of Artificial Intelligence adoption on financial reporting quality. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests, including multicollinearity assessment, common method bias analysis, and model fit indices such as the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), will be conducted to ensure the adequacy, consistency, and robustness of the structural model. The study anticipates that Artificial Intelligence adoption will have a significant positive impact on the financial reporting quality of listed companies in Nigeria. AI-enabled accounting systems are expected to improve the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, reliability, comparability, and transparency of financial reports by automating transaction processing, reducing manual errors, strengthening internal controls, and enhancing data validation procedures. Artificial Intelligence is also anticipated to improve compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), facilitate continuous auditing, strengthen fraud detection mechanisms, accelerate financial statement preparation, and improve the quality of financial disclosures. Furthermore, AI-driven predictive analytics and intelligent reporting tools are expected to enhance managerial decision-making, improve risk assessment, strengthen regulatory compliance, and increase investor confidence in published financial statements. Listed companies that effectively integrate Artificial Intelligence into their accounting and financial reporting systems are therefore expected to produce higher-quality financial reports characterized by greater transparency, improved earnings quality, reduced reporting errors, enhanced reporting efficiency, and increased stakeholder confidence. Conversely, organizations with limited AI capabilities or ineffective digital infrastructure may continue to experience reporting delays, accounting inaccuracies, weak financial controls, and lower financial reporting quality. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on accounting information systems, financial reporting, corporate governance, and digital accounting by providing robust evidence on the relationship between Artificial Intelligence adoption and financial reporting quality among listed companies in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that focused broadly on accounting automation or digital transformation, this research specifically examines Artificial Intelligence as an emerging technological innovation capable of transforming corporate financial reporting practices. The findings will provide valuable insights for listed companies, the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), investors, auditors, financial analysts, policymakers, professional accounting bodies, technology providers, and academic researchers regarding the strategic importance of Artificial Intelligence in promoting transparency, accountability, and high-quality financial reporting. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening AI adoption, enhancing digital accounting capabilities, improving regulatory compliance, promoting continuous professional training, strengthening internal control systems, and fostering sustainable financial reporting practices and investor confidence within Nigeria's capital market.
