Influence of Cryptocurrency Transactions on Financial Reporting Quality of Nigerian Businesses
Abstract
The rapid evolution of financial technology has significantly transformed the global business environment, with cryptocurrencies emerging as one of the most innovative forms of digital assets. Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Binance Coin, and stablecoins have gained increasing acceptance among businesses for investment purposes, cross-border transactions, digital payments, and asset diversification. In Nigeria, cryptocurrency adoption has grown considerably despite evolving regulatory frameworks and policy changes introduced by financial regulators. Businesses are increasingly utilizing cryptocurrency transactions to facilitate international trade, reduce transaction costs, accelerate payment processing, and improve access to decentralized financial services. However, the growing use of cryptocurrencies presents substantial accounting and financial reporting challenges due to issues relating to asset recognition, valuation, measurement, disclosure, impairment assessment, taxation, and regulatory compliance. The absence of comprehensive accounting standards specifically governing cryptocurrency transactions has created uncertainty regarding their appropriate treatment in financial statements, raising concerns about the quality, reliability, comparability, and transparency of corporate financial reports. Consequently, understanding the implications of cryptocurrency transactions for financial reporting has become increasingly important for accounting professionals, regulators, investors, and business managers. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of cryptocurrency transactions on the financial reporting quality of Nigerian businesses. The study is anchored on Institutional Theory, Signaling Theory, and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Institutional Theory explains how organizations adjust their accounting practices and financial reporting systems in response to evolving regulatory requirements, professional standards, and stakeholder expectations regarding digital assets. Signaling Theory posits that organizations provide transparent and credible financial disclosures to reduce information asymmetry and communicate financial integrity, corporate governance quality, and operational efficiency to investors and other stakeholders. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how the perceived usefulness and ease of use of cryptocurrency technologies influence their adoption and integration into organizational financial reporting systems. Guided by these theoretical perspectives, the study seeks to determine the influence of cryptocurrency transactions on the financial reporting quality of Nigerian businesses.A quantitative research design will be adopted using a structured questionnaire administered to professional accountants, finance managers, chief financial officers, auditors, tax consultants, financial controllers, internal auditors, information technology specialists, and business owners involved in cryptocurrency-related activities across selected sectors of the Nigerian economy. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of respondents from financial institutions, technology firms, manufacturing companies, e-commerce businesses, professional service organizations, and other enterprises utilizing digital assets. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize demographic characteristics and respondents' perceptions regarding cryptocurrency adoption and financial reporting practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), may be employed to examine the relationship between cryptocurrency transactions and financial reporting quality. The reliability and validity of the research instrument will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Additional diagnostic tests will be conducted to assess model fitness, multicollinearity, and the robustness of the empirical findings. The study anticipates that cryptocurrency transactions will have a significant influence on the financial reporting quality of Nigerian businesses. The adoption of cryptocurrencies is expected to improve transaction efficiency, facilitate faster cross-border payments, reduce transaction costs, and promote financial innovation. However, cryptocurrency transactions may also introduce significant financial reporting complexities due to price volatility, fair value measurement challenges, impairment recognition, cybersecurity risks, taxation uncertainties, and inconsistent accounting treatments. Businesses with well-established accounting policies and internal controls for cryptocurrency transactions are expected to produce more reliable, transparent, and decision-useful financial reports than organizations lacking appropriate digital asset accounting frameworks. Furthermore, the effective disclosure of cryptocurrency-related transactions is anticipated to improve the credibility of financial statements, reduce information asymmetry, enhance investor confidence, and support informed economic decision-making by stakeholders. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on accounting, financial reporting, financial technology, and digital asset management by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between cryptocurrency transactions and financial reporting quality within the Nigerian business environment. Unlike previous studies that focused primarily on cryptocurrency adoption, investment behavior, or financial technology acceptance, this research specifically examines the accounting and reporting implications of cryptocurrency transactions for business organizations. The findings will provide valuable insights for business managers, accountants, auditors, investors, regulators, policymakers, accounting standard setters, financial technology providers, tax authorities, and academic researchers regarding the importance of developing robust accounting frameworks for digital assets to improve financial reporting quality. The study will also offer evidence-based recommendations for strengthening cryptocurrency accounting policies, enhancing professional training in digital asset accounting, improving regulatory guidance, promoting transparency in financial reporting, and supporting the responsible integration of cryptocurrency transactions into corporate financial management practices in Nigeria.
