Influence of Receivables Turnover on the Financial Performance of Listed Manufacturing Companies in Nigeria

Abstract

Receivables turnover is an important working capital management indicator that measures how efficiently a company manages its trade receivables and converts credit sales into cash within an accounting period. Efficient receivables management enables companies to maintain adequate liquidity, reduce the risk of bad debts, minimize collection costs, and ensure that funds tied up in credit sales are recovered promptly. Financial performance reflects the ability of a company to utilize its resources effectively to generate sustainable profits, maintain financial stability, and create value for shareholders. For manufacturing companies, efficient management of receivables is particularly important because sales are frequently conducted on credit, thereby creating a significant relationship between credit management, cash flow, liquidity, and profitability. In Nigeria, listed manufacturing companies operate in an economic environment characterized by inflation, exchange rate volatility, rising production costs, high interest rates, weak consumer purchasing power, supply chain challenges, and changing market conditions. These factors can affect customers' ability to settle outstanding debts and may consequently influence the liquidity and financial performance of manufacturing companies. Effective receivables turnover management is therefore essential for reducing excessive funds tied up in outstanding customer balances and improving the availability of cash for business operations. Regulatory institutions such as the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) promote sound financial reporting and corporate governance practices that enable stakeholders to assess the financial position and performance of listed companies. Despite these regulatory efforts, manufacturing companies may experience delayed customer payments, high levels of outstanding receivables, bad debts, and inefficient credit collection practices. Although previous studies have examined working capital management, receivables management, and corporate financial performance, empirical evidence regarding the influence of receivables turnover on the financial performance of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria remains limited and inconclusive. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of receivables turnover on the financial performance of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Working Capital Management Theory, Cash Conversion Cycle Theory, and Agency Theory. Working Capital Management Theory emphasizes the importance of efficiently managing current assets and liabilities to achieve an appropriate balance between liquidity and profitability. Cash Conversion Cycle Theory explains that efficient collection of receivables shortens the period between credit sales and cash recovery, thereby improving liquidity and reducing the amount of working capital tied up in the operating cycle. Agency Theory suggests that effective monitoring of credit policies and receivables collection can reduce managerial inefficiency, resource misallocation, and potential conflicts between management and shareholders. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between receivables turnover and financial performance of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to chief financial officers, finance managers, management accountants, credit managers, financial controllers, internal auditors, external auditors, treasury managers, and other professionals involved in receivables and financial management within selected listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of relevant manufacturing subsectors listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). Receivables turnover will be measured using the frequency of receivables conversion into cash, accounts receivable turnover ratio, average collection period, effectiveness of credit policies, debt collection efficiency, monitoring of outstanding customer balances, and bad debt management, while financial performance will be measured using Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), net profit margin, operating profit margin, earnings per share, and profit growth. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and perceptions regarding receivables turnover and financial performance. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the influence of receivables turnover on financial performance. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests, including multicollinearity assessment, common method bias analysis, and model fit indices such as the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), will be conducted to ensure the adequacy, consistency, reliability, and robustness of the structural model. The study anticipates that receivables turnover will have a significant positive influence on the financial performance of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Efficient receivables turnover is expected to enable companies to convert credit sales into cash more quickly, improve operating cash flows, reduce the amount of capital tied up in receivables, and minimize the likelihood of bad debts. Improved cash availability may enable manufacturing companies to purchase raw materials, meet operating expenses, settle short-term obligations, maintain production activities, and take advantage of profitable investment opportunities without excessive dependence on external financing. Efficient receivables management may also reduce administrative and collection costs associated with overdue accounts. Conversely, slow receivables turnover may indicate ineffective credit policies, weak customer screening, delayed collections, or customers' inability to settle their obligations, potentially increasing bad debt expenses and reducing liquidity and profitability. However, excessively restrictive credit policies may reduce sales and customer relationships, suggesting that manufacturing companies need to balance credit sales expansion with effective collection practices. Consequently, efficient and appropriately managed receivables turnover is expected to contribute significantly to improved liquidity, operational efficiency, and sustainable financial performance among listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on working capital management, management accounting, corporate finance, and financial performance by providing comprehensive evidence on the relationship between receivables turnover and the financial performance of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that broadly examined working capital management or liquidity management, this research specifically evaluates receivables turnover as a determinant of financial performance using primary data and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings will provide valuable insights for listed manufacturing companies, financial managers, management accountants, credit managers, auditors, investors, the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), professional accounting bodies, policymakers, regulators, and academic researchers regarding the importance of efficient receivables management. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening credit assessment procedures, improving customer credit policies, enhancing debt collection systems, monitoring outstanding receivables, reducing bad debts, improving cash flow management, and maintaining an appropriate balance between credit sales and collection efficiency to promote sustainable financial performance among listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria.
