The Effect of Digital Financial Reporting on the Quality of Financial Statements of Listed Companies in Nigeria

Abstract

Digital financial reporting has become a transformative innovation in corporate financial reporting, enabling organizations to prepare, process, disseminate, and communicate financial information electronically in a timely, accurate, and standardized manner. The rapid advancement of information and communication technology, coupled with increasing regulatory demands for transparency and accountability, has accelerated the adoption of digital reporting practices across the globe. Digital financial reporting encompasses the use of technologies such as eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, cloud-based accounting platforms, integrated reporting systems, automated financial reporting software, and other digital reporting tools that enhance the preparation and dissemination of financial statements. These technologies facilitate real-time reporting, improve data accuracy, strengthen internal controls, enhance comparability, reduce reporting delays, and support better decision-making by investors, regulators, creditors, and other stakeholders. In Nigeria, the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), the growing digitalization of business operations, and increased regulatory oversight by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) have encouraged listed companies to embrace digital financial reporting practices. Despite these developments, concerns remain regarding the quality of financial statements due to issues such as inconsistent reporting practices, delayed financial reporting, earnings manipulation, inadequate disclosures, and weak information systems. The increasing reliance on digital technologies presents opportunities for improving the quality of financial statements through enhanced accuracy, completeness, timeliness, reliability, comparability, and transparency. However, challenges relating to cybersecurity threats, technological infrastructure, implementation costs, digital skills, and system integration continue to affect the effectiveness of digital financial reporting. Although previous studies have examined accounting information systems and financial reporting quality, empirical evidence on the effect of digital financial reporting on the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria remains limited and inconclusive. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of digital financial reporting on the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model, and Agency Theory. The Technology Acceptance Model explains that organizations adopt digital financial reporting technologies based on perceived usefulness and ease of use, which influence reporting efficiency and organizational performance. The DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model posits that high-quality information systems improve information quality, system quality, user satisfaction, and organizational effectiveness, thereby enhancing financial reporting quality. Agency Theory argues that transparent and reliable financial reporting reduces information asymmetry between management and shareholders, strengthens accountability, and improves stakeholders' confidence in corporate financial reports. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between digital financial reporting and the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria. The study adopts an ex post facto research design utilizing secondary data obtained from the audited annual reports, financial statements, and corporate reports of companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), together with relevant regulatory information published by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and other relevant institutions. A longitudinal panel data approach covering a ten-year period will be employed to examine the relationship between digital financial reporting and the quality of financial statements over time. Purposive sampling will be used to select listed companies with complete and consistent financial reporting information throughout the study period. Digital financial reporting will be measured using digital reporting adoption index, XBRL implementation, ERP integration, automated financial reporting systems, timeliness of electronic reporting, and level of digital reporting compliance, while the quality of financial statements will be measured using qualitative characteristics of financial information, including relevance, faithful representation, comparability, verifiability, timeliness, understandability, disclosure quality, earnings quality, and financial reporting transparency. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics to summarize the characteristics of the study variables, correlation analysis to determine the degree of association among variables, and panel regression techniques, including Fixed Effects and Random Effects models, to estimate the effect of digital financial reporting on financial statement quality. The Hausman specification test will determine the most appropriate estimation model, while diagnostic tests including multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation, stationarity, normality, cross-sectional dependence, endogeneity, and model specification tests will be conducted to ensure the validity, consistency, reliability, and robustness of the empirical findings.

The study anticipates that digital financial reporting will have a significant positive effect on the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria. The adoption of digital reporting technologies is expected to improve the accuracy, completeness, consistency, timeliness, comparability, and reliability of financial information by automating reporting processes, minimizing human errors, and enhancing data integrity. Digital financial reporting is also anticipated to facilitate compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), strengthen internal controls, improve financial disclosure practices, accelerate financial statement preparation, and enhance transparency in corporate reporting. Furthermore, digital reporting systems are expected to improve stakeholder access to financial information, support informed investment decisions, strengthen regulatory monitoring, and increase investor confidence in published financial statements. Companies with advanced digital reporting capabilities are therefore expected to produce higher-quality financial statements characterized by greater transparency, reduced reporting errors, improved earnings quality, enhanced credibility, and stronger market confidence. Conversely, firms with limited digital reporting infrastructure or ineffective information systems may continue to experience reporting delays, inconsistent disclosures, weak financial reporting controls, and lower financial statement quality.

This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on accounting information systems, financial reporting, corporate governance, and digital accounting by providing robust evidence on the relationship between digital financial reporting and the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that focused primarily on accounting software or financial reporting timeliness, this research provides a broader evaluation of digital financial reporting technologies and their implications for financial statement quality using firm-level longitudinal panel data. The findings will provide valuable insights for listed companies, the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), investors, auditors, financial analysts, policymakers, professional accounting bodies, software developers, and academic researchers regarding the strategic importance of digital financial reporting in promoting transparency, accountability, and high-quality corporate financial reporting. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening digital reporting infrastructure, improving regulatory compliance, enhancing technological capabilities, promoting digital accounting innovation, improving financial reporting quality, and fostering sustainable confidence in Nigeria's capital market.
