Assessment of Agricultural Extension Agents’ Roles in Improving Smallholder Farm Productivity
Abstract
Agricultural extension agents play an important role in supporting smallholder farmers by providing technical information, advisory services, training, demonstrations, and practical guidance on improved agricultural practices. Their activities can help farmers make informed decisions concerning production methods, farm inputs, resource management, pest control, and other aspects of farm operations. Assessing the roles performed by extension agents is therefore important for understanding their contribution to improving productivity among smallholder farmers. This study will assess the roles of agricultural extension agents in improving smallholder farm productivity. It will examine the activities performed by extension agents, including farmer training, farm visits, technical advice, field demonstrations, information dissemination, input-use guidance, and problem-solving support. The study will also assess the extent to which these roles contribute to improvements in farm output, crop yield, production efficiency, and the application of recommended agricultural practices. The study will focus on agricultural extension agents, smallholder farmers, extension roles, farm productivity, technical advisory services, farmer training, farm visits, field demonstrations, agricultural information, input management, improved farming practices, and production efficiency. Attention will be given to the frequency and nature of interactions between extension agents and farmers and the specific forms of assistance provided to improve farm management and production activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected smallholder farmers and agricultural extension agents using structured questionnaires, interviews where appropriate, and relevant farm production records. Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentage analysis, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to assess the roles of extension agents and their relationship with smallholder farm productivity. Farm output and yield indicators will also be examined to provide evidence on productivity levels. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension agents may make important contributions to smallholder farm productivity through the provision of relevant information, technical guidance, practical demonstrations, and regular farm support. Farmers who receive more consistent extension assistance may demonstrate improved production practices and better management of farm resources. The extent of the contribution may depend on the availability of extension agents, frequency of contact, quality of advisory services, and relevance of the information provided. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, smallholder farmers, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, non-governmental organizations, agricultural development programmes, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving the effectiveness of extension personnel and strengthening the delivery of agricultural advisory services. The findings may also assist agricultural institutions in identifying areas where extension agents require additional resources, training, and operational support. The study concludes that agricultural extension agents have important roles in supporting smallholder farmers and promoting improved farm productivity through technical advice, training, demonstrations, and regular advisory contact. It is therefore recommended that agricultural institutions strengthen extension services by providing adequate personnel, transportation, training, communication tools, and other resources required for extension agents to effectively support smallholder farmers.
