Assessment of Dairy Farmers’ Adoption of Hygienic Milking Practices

Abstract

Hygienic milking practices are essential for maintaining milk quality, protecting animal health, and reducing the risk of contamination during milk production. Poor hygiene during milking can introduce microorganisms, dirt, and other contaminants into milk, thereby reducing its quality and creating potential health risks for consumers. Adoption of appropriate practices such as cleaning the udder, washing hands, using clean milking equipment, maintaining a hygienic milking environment, and properly storing milk can contribute to safer and higher-quality dairy products. This study will assess dairy farmers’ adoption of hygienic milking practices. The study will determine the extent to which dairy farmers adopt recommended hygiene practices during milking and identify the specific practices commonly used on their farms. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of hygienic milking and identify factors that may influence their adoption of recommended practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as washing hands before and after milking, cleaning and drying the udder, maintaining clean milking containers, cleaning milking equipment, ensuring a hygienic milking environment, using clean water, proper handling of milk, filtering milk where appropriate, protecting milk from contamination, and maintaining suitable milk storage conditions. It will also examine farmers’ sources of information on hygienic milking practices, including agricultural extension agents, dairy associations, veterinary personnel, farmer groups, training programmes, and fellow farmers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected dairy farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their adoption of hygienic milking practices. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate statistical techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics, access to agricultural information, and adoption levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of hygienic milking practices among dairy farmers. Farmers with greater access to extension services, dairy training, veterinary advice, and reliable information may demonstrate higher adoption of recommended hygiene practices. However, limited access to clean water, inadequate milking facilities, lack of appropriate cleaning materials, insufficient extension support, labour constraints, and limited knowledge may affect farmers’ consistent adoption of hygienic milking practices. The study will be useful to dairy farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinary professionals, dairy processors, public health authorities, agricultural development agencies, government livestock departments, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for understanding gaps in hygienic milk production and strengthening farmer education on appropriate milking practices. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical training programmes and interventions aimed at improving milk quality and safety. The study concludes that adoption of hygienic milking practices is important for improving milk quality, protecting animal health, and reducing contamination risks. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and livestock development agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, farm visits, dairy hygiene training, and accessible information materials. Dairy farmers should also be encouraged to maintain personal hygiene, clean the udder and milking equipment properly, use clean water and containers, and handle and store milk appropriately to support safe and quality milk production.
