Assessment of Farmers’ Access to Agricultural Information Through Community Notice Boards

Abstract

Community notice boards are locally accessible communication channels used to display and share information within rural communities. They can provide farmers with information on agricultural practices, input availability, market opportunities, training programmes, weather conditions, government agricultural programmes, and other farming-related activities. Assessing farmers’ access to agricultural information through community notice boards is important because the availability, visibility, and usefulness of such information may influence farmers’ awareness and decision-making. This study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural information through community notice boards. It will examine the extent to which farmers use community notice boards as sources of agricultural information and determine the types of agricultural information commonly accessed through them. The study will also assess the frequency of farmers’ exposure to notice boards, their perceived usefulness of the information provided, and the challenges that may affect their access. The study will focus on community notice boards, agricultural information access, farmers’ information needs, information availability, frequency of information exposure, information relevance, information usefulness, agricultural production information, market information, agricultural input information, extension information, and community-based communication. Attention will be given to the accessibility, visibility, location, content, language, and regular updating of information displayed on community notice boards. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to community notice boards, frequency of use, types of agricultural information obtained, and perceived usefulness of the information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to assess farmers’ access and identify factors associated with their use of community notice boards. The study is expected to reveal that community notice boards may provide farmers with useful agricultural information, particularly where the boards are strategically located, regularly updated, clearly presented, and accessible to farmers. Farmers may have greater access to information on agricultural meetings, extension activities, input availability, market opportunities, and government programmes. However, access may be limited by inadequate updating of information, poor visibility, language barriers, lack of awareness, distance from notice boards, and limited attention to the information displayed. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, community development organisations, agricultural agencies, local authorities, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving community-based agricultural communication systems and strengthening farmers’ access to relevant information. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing appropriate strategies for using community notice boards alongside other communication channels to reach farmers effectively. The study concludes that community notice boards can serve as accessible channels for disseminating agricultural information to farmers, particularly in communities where other information sources may be limited. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and community organisations ensure that notice boards are strategically located, regularly updated, clearly designed, and supplied with relevant agricultural information in languages that farmers can easily understand. Regular monitoring should also be encouraged to improve the effectiveness of community notice boards as agricultural information channels.
