Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Farm Tool Maintenance Practices

Abstract

Farm tool maintenance is an important component of effective farm management because properly maintained tools can improve work efficiency, reduce equipment damage, minimise replacement costs, and support timely completion of agricultural activities. Farm tools such as hoes, cutlasses, sickles, pruning tools, sprayers, shovels, wheelbarrows, and other implements require appropriate cleaning, sharpening, repair, lubrication, and storage to remain functional. Adoption of improved maintenance practices can therefore contribute to better utilisation and longer service life of farm tools. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of improved farm tool maintenance practices. It will determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended maintenance practices and identify the common methods used to maintain farm tools. The study will also examine factors associated with farmers’ adoption of improved farm tool maintenance practices. The study will focus on practices such as cleaning tools after use, sharpening cutting implements, tightening loose components, repairing damaged parts, lubricating appropriate tools, protecting tools from moisture and rust, storing tools in suitable locations, inspecting tools before use, and replacing worn-out components. It will also consider farmers’ access to maintenance information, extension services, training, repair facilities, maintenance materials, and relevant technical assistance. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their adoption of improved farm tool maintenance practices. Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, adoption indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to analyse the data and determine the level of adoption and factors associated with farmers’ maintenance practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of improved farm tool maintenance practices among farmers. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension information, practical training, maintenance materials, and technical assistance may demonstrate higher adoption of recommended practices. However, inadequate maintenance knowledge, limited access to repair services, lack of appropriate maintenance materials, financial constraints, poor storage facilities, and limited extension contact may affect farmers’ adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, farm equipment suppliers, cooperative organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the maintenance practices adopted by farmers and the challenges affecting proper care of farm tools. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that promote efficient farm tool management and reduce unnecessary equipment replacement costs. The study concludes that adoption of improved farm tool maintenance practices is important for maintaining functional farm equipment and improving the efficiency of agricultural operations. It is therefore recommended that farmers receive regular practical training on proper cleaning, sharpening, repair, lubrication, storage, and inspection of farm tools. Agricultural extension agencies should also strengthen advisory services and improve farmers’ access to maintenance information, repair facilities, and appropriate maintenance materials.
