Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Tomato Handling Practices

Abstract

Tomato is an important vegetable crop that contributes to household food supply, income generation, employment, and agricultural development. However, tomatoes are highly perishable and can experience substantial post-harvest losses due to poor harvesting, handling, transportation, sorting, packaging, and storage practices. The adoption of improved tomato handling practices can help farmers maintain product quality, reduce physical damage and spoilage, extend shelf life, and improve the market value of harvested tomatoes. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of improved tomato handling practices. It will determine the level of adoption of recommended handling practices among tomato farmers and examine the extent to which farmers apply appropriate methods during harvesting, sorting, packaging, transportation, and temporary storage. The study will also identify the major sources of information available to farmers and the challenges affecting their adoption of improved tomato handling practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as harvesting tomatoes at appropriate maturity stages, careful picking and handling, sorting and grading, removal of damaged fruits, use of suitable containers, appropriate packaging, careful loading and unloading, proper transportation, protection from excessive heat, hygienic handling, and suitable temporary storage. It will also consider farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, training, demonstrations, market information, and improved handling materials. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from tomato farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their adoption of improved tomato handling practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, adoption-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine patterns of adoption and factors associated with farmers’ use of recommended handling practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of improved tomato handling practices among farmers. Farmers with better access to extension services, training, demonstrations, market information, and appropriate handling materials may demonstrate greater adoption of recommended practices. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate handling equipment, limited technical knowledge, financial constraints, poor transportation facilities, insufficient storage facilities, and weak access to extension support. The study will be useful to tomato farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmer organisations, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, produce marketers, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes and promoting appropriate tomato handling practices. The findings may also support efforts to reduce post-harvest losses, improve tomato quality, increase market value, and improve farmers’ income from tomato production. The study concludes that the adoption of improved tomato handling practices is important for reducing post-harvest losses and maintaining the quality and market value of harvested tomatoes. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, and advisory services on improved tomato handling. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate harvesting, sorting, packaging, transportation, and temporary storage practices and improve their access to suitable handling equipment and facilities.
