Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Integrated Crop-Livestock Production Practices
Abstract
Integrated crop-livestock production is an agricultural system that combines crop cultivation and livestock rearing within the same farming operation to improve resource use, farm productivity, and sustainability. The integration of crops and livestock can allow farmers to make productive use of crop residues, animal manure, available land, and other farm resources. Assessing farmers’ adoption of integrated crop-livestock production practices is therefore important for understanding the extent to which farmers utilize these practices and the benefits associated with their application. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of integrated crop-livestock production practices. It will examine the level of farmers’ awareness, knowledge, and use of practices that integrate crop production with livestock activities. The study will also assess the extent to which farmers apply crop residues for livestock feeding, animal manure for crop production, livestock grazing within appropriate farm systems, and other resource-sharing practices between crop and livestock enterprises. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of manure application, crop residue utilization, livestock feeding systems, nutrient recycling, integrated farm planning, crop-livestock resource management, and the use of livestock activities to support crop production. It will examine farmers’ access to information, practical knowledge, farm resources, and extension support related to integrated production practices and assess the level of application of these practices among farmers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers involved in crop and livestock production using structured questionnaires and appropriate farm assessment instruments. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine the relationship between selected factors and farmers’ adoption of integrated crop-livestock production practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of integrated crop-livestock production practices among farmers. Farmers with greater awareness, relevant technical knowledge, access to extension information, and adequate farm resources may demonstrate higher application of integrated practices. The study may also reveal differences in the adoption of specific practices, particularly those involving manure management, crop residue utilization, livestock feeding, and nutrient recycling. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock and crop development agencies, government agricultural institutions, non-governmental organisations, agricultural researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for developing extension programmes, farmer training activities, and resource-management initiatives aimed at encouraging the effective integration of crop and livestock enterprises. The study concludes that the adoption of integrated crop-livestock production practices can contribute to more efficient utilization of farm resources and improved agricultural production systems. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations strengthen farmer education, practical demonstrations, and advisory support on integrated production practices while promoting appropriate techniques for crop residue management, livestock production, manure utilization, and nutrient recycling.
