Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Zero-Tillage Farming Practices
Abstract
Zero-tillage farming is a conservation agriculture practice in which crops are established with minimal or no mechanical disturbance of the soil, often through direct seeding into undisturbed soil while maintaining crop residues or other forms of soil cover. The practice can help reduce soil erosion, conserve soil moisture, protect soil structure, reduce fuel and labour requirements, and support sustainable crop production. Farmers’ adoption of zero-tillage farming practices is therefore important for promoting efficient soil management and improving the long-term sustainability of agricultural production. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of zero-tillage farming practices. The study will determine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended zero-tillage practices and identify the specific practices that are widely or less frequently adopted. It will also examine farmers’ sources of information, access to agricultural extension services, frequency of extension contact, and other factors that may influence their adoption of zero-tillage farming practices. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of direct seeding, retention of crop residues, maintenance of soil cover, reduced soil disturbance, appropriate weed management, use of suitable planting equipment, crop rotation, moisture conservation, and other practices associated with zero-tillage farming. Attention will also be given to farmers’ methods of managing crop residues, controlling weeds, preparing planting materials, timing farm operations, and maintaining soil conditions suitable for crop establishment under zero-tillage systems. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their adoption of zero-tillage farming practices, access to extension services, sources of information, farm characteristics, and production resources. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine factors associated with farmers’ adoption of zero-tillage farming practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of zero-tillage farming practices among farmers. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services, practical demonstrations, technical information, suitable equipment, and training programmes may demonstrate higher adoption levels. The study may also identify constraints affecting adoption, including high cost or limited availability of zero-tillage equipment, inadequate technical knowledge, weed management challenges, labour requirements, limited extension contact, availability of crop residues, and farmers’ unfamiliarity with zero-tillage methods. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, conservation agriculture organisations, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may provide useful information for designing programmes that promote sustainable soil management and conservation agriculture. Increased adoption of zero-tillage practices may contribute to reduced soil erosion, improved moisture conservation, better soil structure, reduced land degradation, lower production costs, and improved agricultural productivity. The study concludes that adoption of zero-tillage farming practices can contribute to sustainable soil management and efficient crop production when appropriate techniques and resources are available. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, farm visits, field days, farmer field schools, and regular advisory services. Farmers should also be supported with suitable zero-tillage equipment, locally appropriate technical information, improved access to inputs, and practical training to encourage effective adoption of zero-tillage farming practices.
