Assessment of Farmers’ Awareness of Precision Agriculture Technologies
Abstract
Precision agriculture technologies involve the use of digital tools, spatial information, sensors, data, and other technological systems to improve the accuracy and efficiency of agricultural production. These technologies can support farmers in monitoring crops, managing soil, applying inputs, assessing field conditions, and making informed production decisions. Farmers’ awareness of precision agriculture technologies is an important consideration in understanding their exposure to modern agricultural innovations and their potential readiness to use technology-based farming practices. This study will assess farmers’ awareness of precision agriculture technologies. It will examine farmers’ level of awareness and understanding of different precision agriculture technologies and determine the extent to which they are familiar with their uses in agricultural production. The study will also identify the major sources through which farmers obtain information about precision agriculture technologies and examine areas where farmers have limited awareness. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of GPS-based farm mapping, remote sensing, satellite imagery, drones, soil sensors, precision irrigation systems, variable-rate input application, yield monitoring systems, digital farm management tools, and other precision agriculture technologies. It will also assess farmers’ awareness of the potential benefits of these technologies, including improved input efficiency, better crop monitoring, reduced production costs, improved resource management, and more accurate farm decision-making. Sources of information such as agricultural extension agents, social media, agricultural technology providers, farmer groups, research institutions, radio, and training programmes will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their awareness, understanding, and sources of information concerning precision agriculture technologies. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine relationships between farmers’ access to agricultural technology information and their level of awareness of precision agriculture technologies. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ awareness of precision agriculture technologies. Farmers may demonstrate greater awareness of relatively familiar technologies such as GPS, drones, and satellite imagery, while awareness of advanced technologies such as variable-rate application, soil sensors, and yield monitoring systems may be more limited. Inadequate extension information, high technology costs, limited access to demonstrations, poor digital infrastructure, and insufficient technical training may contribute to low awareness among some farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, agricultural technology providers, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for developing awareness and training programmes on precision agriculture technologies. The study may also assist extension organisations and technology providers in identifying the technologies that require greater farmer education and developing practical demonstrations that make precision agriculture easier to understand. The study concludes that farmers’ awareness is an important foundation for understanding and potentially adopting precision agriculture technologies in modern agricultural production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies should strengthen awareness campaigns, demonstrations, and training on precision agriculture technologies and their practical applications. Collaboration among extension services, research institutions, technology providers, and farmer organisations should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to accurate information and practical exposure to precision agriculture technologies.
