Assessment of Farmers’ Awareness of Renewable Energy Technologies for Agriculture
Abstract
Renewable energy technologies are increasingly relevant to agricultural production because they provide alternative sources of energy for farm operations while reducing dependence on conventional fossil-fuel-based energy sources. Technologies such as solar-powered irrigation systems, solar dryers, biogas systems, biomass energy technologies, solar water pumps, and renewable-energy-powered processing equipment can support agricultural activities. Farmers’ awareness of these technologies is important because knowledge of their uses, benefits, costs, and operational requirements can influence their willingness to consider them for agricultural production. This study will assess farmers’ awareness of renewable energy technologies for agriculture. It will examine farmers’ level of awareness of different renewable energy technologies and determine the extent to which they understand their applications in agricultural production. The study will also assess farmers’ sources of information about renewable energy technologies and their knowledge of the potential benefits of using renewable energy in farming activities. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of solar-powered irrigation systems, solar water pumps, solar dryers, biogas technologies, biomass energy systems, solar-powered farm machinery, and renewable-energy-powered crop and livestock processing equipment. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of the uses, benefits, availability, operating requirements, maintenance, affordability, and environmental advantages of these technologies. Attention will also be given to farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension information, demonstrations, training programmes, media programmes, and other sources through which renewable energy information is communicated. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their awareness and knowledge of renewable energy technologies used in agriculture. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between farmers’ awareness and selected sources of renewable energy information. The awareness levels associated with different renewable energy technologies will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ awareness of renewable energy technologies for agriculture. Farmers who have greater exposure to agricultural extension services, training, demonstrations, media information, and other agricultural information sources may demonstrate higher levels of awareness. The study may also reveal that awareness is stronger for commonly promoted technologies such as solar energy, while knowledge of biogas, biomass, and other specialized renewable energy technologies may be relatively limited. Inadequate information, limited demonstrations, perceived high costs, and lack of technical support may remain important challenges to farmers’ awareness. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, renewable energy providers, government agricultural agencies, research institutions, non-governmental organizations, environmental organizations, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The findings may provide useful information for designing extension programmes, awareness campaigns, training activities, and practical demonstrations that improve farmers’ understanding of renewable energy technologies and their applications in agricultural production. The study concludes that farmers’ awareness is an important foundation for the effective promotion of renewable energy technologies in agriculture. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant stakeholders strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, field training, media programmes, and accessible technical information on renewable energy technologies. Collaboration between agricultural extension organizations, renewable energy providers, research institutions, and government agencies should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to reliable information and technical guidance.
