Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Biological Inputs
Abstract
Agricultural biological inputs are increasingly important in sustainable crop production because they provide alternatives or complements to conventional agricultural inputs and can support soil health, nutrient management, pest control, and crop productivity. Biological inputs may include biofertilizers, microbial inoculants, biopesticides, beneficial microorganisms, and other biologically based products used in agricultural production. Farmers’ knowledge of these inputs is important because adequate understanding can influence their ability to identify, select, handle, and appropriately use biological inputs on their farms. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural biological inputs. The study will determine farmers’ level of awareness and understanding of different biological inputs and examine their knowledge of their uses, benefits, application methods, handling requirements, and sources. It will also identify areas of knowledge deficiency that may require additional agricultural extension education and advisory support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of biofertilizers, biopesticides, microbial inoculants, beneficial microorganisms, biological soil amendments, and other biological products used in crop production. It will examine farmers’ understanding of the functions of biological inputs, application rates, timing, storage conditions, handling procedures, compatibility with other farm inputs, expected benefits, limitations, and sources of reliable information. Farmers’ sources of knowledge, including agricultural extension agents, input suppliers, farmer organisations, research institutions, media platforms, and training programmes, will also be assessed. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of agricultural biological inputs and related production practices. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate statistical techniques may be used to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and examine variations based on relevant farmer characteristics and information sources. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural biological inputs. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services, training programmes, demonstrations, and reliable agricultural information may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. However, limited awareness, inadequate extension contact, insufficient practical demonstrations, poor availability of biological inputs, difficulties in identifying quality products, and limited technical information may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil scientists, crop protection specialists, biological input producers, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, input suppliers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on farmers’ understanding of biological inputs and identify areas requiring improved agricultural education. The findings may also assist stakeholders in designing practical extension programmes, demonstrations, and information materials that promote appropriate knowledge and responsible use of agricultural biological inputs. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agricultural biological inputs is important for farmers to make informed decisions concerning their use and management in crop production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, training programmes, farm visits, field days, and accessible information materials on biological inputs. Farmers should also be encouraged to obtain biological inputs from reliable sources and follow recommended application, handling, storage, and management practices to support sustainable agricultural production.
