Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Disaster Preparedness Plans
Abstract
Agricultural activities are exposed to various disasters, including floods, droughts, fire outbreaks, pest and disease emergencies, extreme weather events, and other hazards that can affect farm productivity and rural livelihoods. Agricultural disaster preparedness plans provide a structured approach for identifying potential risks, preparing resources, protecting farm assets, and responding effectively to emergencies. Farmers’ knowledge of such plans is important because adequate preparedness can help reduce losses, improve emergency response, and support the continuity of agricultural activities following disaster events. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural disaster preparedness plans. The study will examine farmers’ understanding of the components and importance of disaster preparedness planning and their knowledge of appropriate actions to take before, during, and after agricultural emergencies. It will also assess farmers’ awareness of risk identification, emergency resource preparation, communication procedures, evacuation arrangements, farm asset protection, and recovery planning. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural disaster risks, disaster preparedness plans, emergency response procedures, risk assessment, farm asset protection, emergency resource management, evacuation planning, communication systems, crop and livestock protection, farm recovery planning, and disaster information sources. Attention will also be given to farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension information, training programmes, community preparedness activities, and other sources through which they obtain information about agricultural disaster preparedness. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of agricultural disaster preparedness plans. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used to examine differences in farmers’ knowledge based on relevant characteristics and sources of preparedness information. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural disaster preparedness plans. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of common agricultural risks and basic preparedness measures, while others may have limited knowledge of formal preparedness planning, emergency communication, resource allocation, evacuation procedures, and recovery arrangements. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ access to reliable disaster preparedness information and practical guidance. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, disaster management organizations, local authorities, non-governmental organizations, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for designing extension programmes and community-based interventions that improve farmers’ understanding of agricultural disaster preparedness. The study may also assist relevant agencies in developing simple and practical preparedness plans that farmers can understand and apply within their farming operations. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agricultural disaster preparedness plans is important for improving farmers’ ability to anticipate risks, protect farm resources, and respond effectively to emergencies. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and disaster management agencies strengthen farmer education on disaster preparedness planning, provide practical training on emergency response procedures, and improve farmers’ access to timely and relevant information on agricultural disaster risks and preparedness measures.
