Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Knowledge-Sharing Platforms

Abstract

Agricultural knowledge-sharing platforms provide farmers with opportunities to access, exchange, and share information on farming practices, technologies, markets, weather conditions, and other agricultural activities. These platforms may include mobile applications, social media groups, online agricultural communities, digital advisory platforms, and other information-sharing channels. Farmers’ knowledge of such platforms is important because their ability to identify, access, understand, and use available agricultural information can influence their decision-making and management of farm activities. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural knowledge-sharing platforms. The study will determine farmers’ awareness of available knowledge-sharing platforms, assess their understanding of the functions and uses of such platforms, and examine their knowledge of how agricultural information can be accessed and exchanged through digital and other communication channels. It will also identify areas where farmers may have limited knowledge of agricultural knowledge-sharing opportunities. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural knowledge-sharing platforms, awareness of digital agricultural platforms, information access, information exchange, mobile applications, social media platforms, online agricultural communities, digital advisory services, agricultural discussion groups, information verification, platform accessibility, and use of shared agricultural information. Information will be obtained from farmers to assess their knowledge of different platforms and their understanding of the opportunities provided for agricultural information sharing. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ knowledge and awareness levels. Knowledge scores will be developed to assess respondents’ understanding of agricultural knowledge-sharing platforms, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of agricultural knowledge-sharing platforms among farmers. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of commonly available digital information channels, while others may have limited awareness of specialized agricultural platforms and their functions. The study may also reveal knowledge gaps relating to information verification, platform navigation, information sharing, and identification of reliable agricultural information sources. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, digital agricultural service providers, researchers, farmer organizations, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for developing agricultural information and communication programmes that improve farmers’ awareness and understanding of knowledge-sharing platforms. The findings may also assist extension personnel in promoting appropriate platforms for sharing timely and relevant agricultural information with farming communities. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of agricultural knowledge-sharing platforms is important for improving access to and exchange of relevant agricultural information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant stakeholders strengthen farmer education on available knowledge-sharing platforms, their functions, information verification, and effective platform use. Practical demonstrations and digital literacy support should also be provided to help farmers make better use of agricultural knowledge-sharing opportunities.
