Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Land Mapping Technologies
Abstract
Agricultural land mapping technologies are increasingly useful tools for identifying, measuring, monitoring, and managing farmland resources. Technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, geographic information systems (GIS), satellite imagery, digital farm mapping applications, and remote sensing tools can provide farmers with information about farm boundaries, land size, field location, soil conditions, and other spatial characteristics of agricultural land. Farmers’ knowledge of these technologies is important for effective farm planning, resource management, and informed agricultural decision-making. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land mapping technologies. It will examine farmers’ awareness and understanding of different land mapping technologies and determine their level of knowledge regarding their uses in agricultural production. The study will also assess farmers’ ability to identify, interpret, and use basic information generated through agricultural land mapping technologies. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of GPS, GIS, satellite imagery, remote sensing, digital farm mapping applications, and other relevant geospatial technologies used in agricultural land management. Areas of assessment will include knowledge of farm boundary mapping, measurement of farm size, identification of farm locations, digital mapping of farm plots, monitoring of land-use changes, and the use of spatial information for farm planning. Farmers’ sources of information and exposure to agricultural extension services relating to land mapping technologies will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment tests. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to determine farmers’ levels of knowledge and awareness. Inferential statistical techniques, including correlation and regression analysis, will be used to examine relationships between farmers’ exposure to agricultural information and their knowledge of land mapping technologies. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agricultural land mapping technologies. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension information, digital agricultural tools, and practical training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge than those with limited exposure. The study may also reveal that while some farmers are aware of technologies such as GPS and digital mapping applications, their practical understanding and ability to use these technologies for farm management may remain limited. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, geospatial technology providers, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for designing extension programmes and training activities aimed at improving farmers’ understanding of digital and geospatial technologies. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in identifying knowledge gaps and developing appropriate educational materials and practical demonstrations for farmers. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land mapping technologies is an important consideration in promoting effective land management and modern farm planning. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide practical training and demonstrations on GPS, GIS, satellite imagery, and digital farm mapping applications. Extension programmes should also promote simple and accessible mapping technologies that farmers can understand and use effectively in managing their agricultural land.
