Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Land-Use Regulations

Abstract

Agricultural land-use regulations are important for guiding the use, management, conservation, and development of land for farming and related activities. Such regulations may address land allocation, permissible agricultural activities, land conversion, environmental protection, soil conservation, water use, grazing, farm development, and other requirements affecting agricultural land management. Farmers’ knowledge of these regulations is important because inadequate awareness may contribute to inappropriate land-use practices, conflicts, environmental degradation, and difficulties in complying with applicable requirements. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land-use regulations. It will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of relevant rules and requirements governing agricultural land use and management. The study will also identify the major sources of information through which farmers obtain knowledge about agricultural land-use regulations and examine factors associated with their level of knowledge. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of land-use requirements, land allocation and tenure provisions, restrictions on agricultural land conversion, environmental protection requirements, soil and water conservation regulations, farm development requirements, grazing and land-use provisions, and other regulations relevant to agricultural land management. It will also consider farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, government information, community organisations, traditional institutions, cooperatives, media platforms, and other sources of information on land-use regulations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of agricultural land-use regulations and sources of regulatory information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean knowledge scores, knowledge indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine farmers’ level of knowledge and factors associated with their knowledge of agricultural land-use regulations. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of agricultural land-use regulations among farmers. Farmers with greater access to extension services, government information, community meetings, land administration information, and relevant training may demonstrate higher levels of regulatory knowledge. However, limited access to official information, complex regulatory requirements, inadequate extension contact, low awareness of land administration procedures, and differences in local land-use practices may constrain farmers’ understanding of applicable regulations. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, land administration authorities, agricultural development agencies, traditional institutions, policymakers, researchers, and community organisations. It may provide useful information on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land-use regulations and identify important information gaps affecting compliance and responsible land management. The findings may also assist relevant authorities in developing farmer-oriented awareness programmes and advisory services on agricultural land-use requirements. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agricultural land-use regulations is important for promoting responsible land management and supporting farmers’ compliance with applicable requirements. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and land administration authorities strengthen farmer education on relevant land-use regulations through practical training, community meetings, advisory visits, and accessible information materials. Clear communication of regulatory requirements and collaboration with local institutions should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ understanding of agricultural land-use regulations.
