Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Landscape Conservation

Abstract

Agricultural landscape conservation involves the management and protection of farmland, vegetation, water bodies, soil resources, and other natural features within agricultural landscapes to maintain environmental quality and support sustainable production. Effective landscape conservation can help reduce soil degradation, protect biodiversity, conserve water resources, control erosion, and maintain the long-term productivity of agricultural land. Farmers’ knowledge of landscape conservation practices is therefore important for promoting responsible management of agricultural environments. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural landscape conservation. The study will examine farmers’ understanding of the importance of conserving agricultural landscapes and determine their knowledge of practices that can protect natural resources within and around farmland. It will also assess the extent to which farmers understand the relationship between landscape conservation, soil productivity, water protection, biodiversity, and sustainable agricultural production. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of landscape conservation, soil conservation, vegetation protection, agroforestry, erosion control, maintenance of buffer zones, protection of water bodies, biodiversity conservation, management of field boundaries, vegetation cover, and sustainable land-use practices. It will also consider farmers’ sources of information on landscape conservation and their exposure to agricultural extension education, conservation programmes, demonstrations, and advisory services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of agricultural landscape conservation practices. The data will be analysed using frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ knowledge levels and identify specific areas of knowledge gaps. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agricultural landscape conservation. Farmers may demonstrate greater knowledge of familiar soil and vegetation conservation practices while showing gaps in areas such as biodiversity protection, maintenance of ecological buffer zones, protection of natural water bodies, and integrated landscape management. The study may also indicate that access to agricultural extension information, conservation training, farming experience, and participation in environmental programmes are associated with farmers’ knowledge of agricultural landscape conservation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, environmental agencies, agricultural development organizations, conservation practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for identifying areas where farmers require additional education and technical support on landscape conservation. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical conservation education programmes that promote sustainable land use, protection of natural resources, and improved agricultural productivity. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of agricultural landscape conservation is important for sustainable management of agricultural environments because adequate knowledge can encourage responsible use and protection of land and natural resources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant environmental organizations strengthen farmer education on soil conservation, vegetation management, biodiversity protection, water-resource conservation, agroforestry, and other landscape conservation practices to promote sustainable agricultural development.
