Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Produce Identification Labelling

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce identification labelling. Agricultural produce identification labelling involves the use of labels, codes, tags, and other identification information to distinguish, describe, organize, and track farm produce during production, storage, transportation, processing, and marketing. Adequate knowledge of identification labelling can support proper record keeping, product traceability, quality management, and effective communication within agricultural value chains. Farmers therefore require appropriate knowledge and skills to apply identification labelling practices effectively. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of agricultural produce identification labelling. It will specifically examine farmers’ awareness and understanding of different forms of produce identification labels, the information commonly included on agricultural produce labels, appropriate labelling procedures, and the importance of labelling to produce management and marketing. The study will also identify farmers’ major sources of information on identification labelling and determine the challenges that may limit their knowledge and application of appropriate labelling practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge, awareness, sources of information, and experience with agricultural produce identification labelling. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce identification labelling. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension education, training programmes, market information, and practical demonstrations are expected to demonstrate better understanding of identification labelling procedures. The study may also reveal knowledge gaps relating to product names, production dates, batch information, quantities, quality indicators, handling instructions, and other relevant information that can be included on agricultural produce labels. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, agricultural development organizations, farmers’ associations, produce marketers, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural value-chain development. The findings are expected to highlight areas where farmers require additional education and technical support on produce identification labelling. Improved knowledge may help farmers organize their produce more effectively, maintain accurate records, strengthen traceability, communicate product information, and improve the presentation of agricultural produce in local and organized markets. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural produce identification labelling is important for effective produce management, traceability, and marketing. It will recommend strengthened extension education, practical demonstrations, farmer training programmes, and the provision of simple guidelines on appropriate labelling procedures. Improving farmers’ knowledge of identification labelling is expected to contribute to better documentation, product identification, quality management, and accountability throughout agricultural production and marketing systems.
