Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Produce Traceability Systems

Abstract

Agricultural produce traceability systems are important tools for tracking the movement and handling of agricultural products from production through processing, storage, transportation, and marketing. Effective traceability can help farmers and other stakeholders maintain product records, identify sources of quality problems, improve transparency, and strengthen consumer confidence in agricultural products. Adequate knowledge of traceability systems is therefore important for farmers seeking to participate effectively in modern agricultural value chains. The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce traceability systems. Specifically, it will examine farmers’ awareness of traceability systems, assess their knowledge of the major components and purposes of produce traceability, determine their understanding of record keeping and product identification procedures, and identify the major sources of information through which farmers acquire knowledge about agricultural produce traceability systems. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to assess their knowledge and understanding of agricultural produce traceability systems. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to examine relationships between selected farmer characteristics and their level of knowledge of agricultural produce traceability systems. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agricultural produce traceability systems. Some farmers may demonstrate awareness of basic traceability practices such as product identification, production records, batch identification, transaction records, and tracking of produce movement, while others may have limited knowledge of systematic traceability procedures and documentation. Limited access to digital technologies, inadequate extension support, insufficient training, cost considerations, and poor record-keeping practices may be identified as factors affecting farmers’ knowledge. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, produce marketers, processors, and farmers’ organizations. Improved knowledge of traceability systems may enable farmers to maintain better production and transaction records, support quality assurance, improve transparency within agricultural value chains, and enhance the marketability and acceptability of agricultural produce. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural produce traceability systems is important for improving farmers’ participation in organized agricultural value chains and supporting product quality management. It will recommend increased extension education, practical training, demonstrations of traceability technologies, improved access to relevant information, and continuous technical support to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and application of agricultural produce traceability systems.
