Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agritourism Enterprise Requirements

Abstract

Agritourism enterprises involve the integration of agricultural activities with tourism services to provide visitors with opportunities to experience farming, rural lifestyles, farm products, recreational activities, and agricultural learning experiences. Successful agritourism development requires farmers to understand various enterprise requirements, including suitable facilities, visitor services, safety measures, marketing, sanitation, customer service, and basic business management. Farmers’ knowledge of these requirements is therefore important for the effective planning and management of agritourism enterprises. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agritourism enterprise requirements. It will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of the facilities, services, skills, and management practices required for establishing and operating agritourism enterprises. The study will also examine farmers’ understanding of visitor management, safety requirements, marketing, sanitation, enterprise planning, and other requirements necessary for providing satisfactory agritourism experiences. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agritourism facilities, visitor accommodation, farm tour arrangements, recreational activities, educational services, visitor safety, sanitation, customer service, marketing, financial management, record keeping, and regulatory requirements. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of farm accessibility, environmental management, hospitality services, and the preparation of agricultural activities for visitors. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of different agritourism enterprise requirements. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and identify specific areas of knowledge gaps. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agritourism enterprise requirements. Farmers may demonstrate better knowledge of basic requirements such as farm cleanliness, visitor reception, farm tours, and recreational activities, while having limited knowledge of areas such as regulatory procedures, financial management, marketing, safety standards, and enterprise planning. The study may also identify specific requirements where farmers need additional information and practical training. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agritourism operators, tourism organisations, rural development agencies, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for designing extension education programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of the requirements for developing sustainable agritourism enterprises. The findings may also assist farmers in identifying opportunities for enterprise diversification and additional income generation. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agritourism enterprise requirements is important for farmers who intend to establish and manage successful agritourism businesses. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension services provide practical education on agritourism planning, facility development, visitor management, safety, sanitation, marketing, financial management, and relevant regulatory requirements to strengthen farmers’ capacity to develop viable agritourism enterprises.
