Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Amaranth Production Practices

Abstract

Amaranth is an important vegetable crop that contributes to household nutrition, income generation, employment, and agricultural diversification. It is valued for its nutritional content and relatively short production period, making it suitable for smallholder farming and local vegetable markets. However, effective amaranth production requires adequate knowledge of recommended agronomic practices. Limited knowledge of appropriate production methods may affect crop establishment, management, yield, and quality. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of amaranth production practices is therefore important for identifying areas where technical support and agricultural information may be required. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of amaranth production practices. It will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of recommended methods used in amaranth production and identify areas where knowledge gaps exist. The study will also examine farmers’ sources of information on amaranth production and their exposure to agricultural extension services, training programmes, and practical demonstrations. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of suitable varieties, site selection, land preparation, seed selection, nursery and direct-seeding methods, planting time, spacing, soil fertility management, fertilizer application, irrigation and water management, weed control, pest and disease management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension agents, agricultural information, training, demonstrations, and advisory services relating to amaranth production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from amaranth farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of recommended production practices and sources of production information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, frequency distributions, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to examine factors associated with farmers’ knowledge of amaranth production practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding recommended amaranth production practices. Farmers with greater access to extension services, training, demonstrations, and reliable agricultural information may demonstrate better knowledge of crop establishment, nutrient management, water management, pest and disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps relating to seed selection, fertilizer application, planting methods, and crop protection. The study will be useful to amaranth farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, horticultural organisations, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders involved in vegetable production. It may provide useful information for identifying farmers’ specific knowledge needs and improving the delivery of agricultural extension and training programmes. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in developing practical educational programmes for amaranth farmers. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of amaranth production practices is important for effective crop management and improved vegetable production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, advisory visits, and dissemination of relevant information on improved amaranth production practices. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate in extension programmes and adopt recommended production techniques to improve crop performance, product quality, and farm productivity.
