Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Animal Breeding Record Management

Abstract

Animal breeding record management is an important component of livestock production because accurate records provide useful information for monitoring reproductive performance, identifying superior animals, planning breeding activities, and making informed herd management decisions. Proper breeding records may include information on mating dates, parentage, birth dates, breeding history, fertility, litter size, offspring performance, and other reproductive characteristics. Farmers’ knowledge of effective breeding record management is therefore important for improving breeding decisions and livestock productivity. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of animal breeding record management. The study will assess the level of farmers’ knowledge of animal breeding record management and determine their understanding of the importance and procedures involved in maintaining accurate breeding records. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of recording mating information, parentage, birth dates, reproductive history, breeding outcomes, offspring identification, and selection information. The study will also identify the sources through which farmers obtain information and guidance on animal breeding record management. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge, animal breeding records, record keeping, mating records, parentage records, birth records, reproductive performance records, offspring identification, breeding history, animal selection, breeding planning, livestock management, and farm documentation. Information will be obtained on farmers’ understanding and use of different breeding records for monitoring livestock reproduction and making breeding decisions. The study will also identify challenges that may limit farmers’ ability to maintain accurate and consistent breeding records. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers through structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of animal breeding record management. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Where appropriate, inferential techniques such as chi-square and correlation analysis may be used to examine relationships between selected farmer characteristics, sources of breeding information, and levels of knowledge. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of animal breeding record management. Farmers may demonstrate better knowledge of basic records such as birth and mating dates but may have limited knowledge of maintaining parentage records, tracking reproductive performance, documenting offspring characteristics, and using breeding records for animal selection. The study may also indicate that access to extension information, livestock training, farming experience, education, and exposure to improved breeding practices influence farmers’ knowledge of breeding record management. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, veterinary and animal production professionals, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in livestock development. It may provide useful information for identifying knowledge gaps and improving extension programmes on livestock breeding documentation. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing simple and practical record-keeping systems that farmers can use to improve breeding decisions and livestock management. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of animal breeding record management is important for effective livestock breeding and productivity improvement. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and livestock development organisations should provide regular training, demonstrations, and advisory services on breeding record management. Farmers should be encouraged to maintain accurate records of mating, parentage, births, reproductive performance, and offspring development to support informed breeding decisions and improve the efficiency of livestock production.
