Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Climate Change Effects on Crop Production

Abstract

Climate change is an important concern in agricultural production because changes in temperature, rainfall patterns, drought frequency, flooding, and the occurrence of extreme weather events can affect crop growth, yield, and farm productivity. Farmers require adequate knowledge of how climate-related changes influence crop production in order to understand emerging production challenges and make appropriate farm management decisions. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of the effects of climate change can therefore provide useful information for strengthening agricultural extension education and climate-related agricultural support. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of climate change effects on crop production. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge regarding the ways in which climate change can affect crop growth, productivity, soil conditions, water availability, pest and disease occurrence, planting periods, and crop yields. It will also identify areas where farmers demonstrate adequate knowledge and areas where further information and technical guidance may be required. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of changes in temperature and rainfall, drought, flooding, soil moisture availability, changes in planting and harvesting periods, crop stress, pest and disease pressures, reduced crop yields, soil fertility changes, and the effects of extreme weather events on agricultural production. The study will also assess farmers’ understanding of climate-related risks to different crop production activities and their awareness of the need for appropriate agricultural management responses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment items designed to measure their understanding of climate change and its effects on crop production. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Correlation analysis may also be used to examine relationships between selected farmer characteristics and their level of knowledge of climate change effects on crop production. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of the effects of climate change on crop production. Farmers may demonstrate greater knowledge of visible effects such as drought, flooding, excessive heat, and changes in rainfall, while knowledge of less direct effects such as changing pest and disease patterns, soil moisture loss, and shifts in crop production periods may vary. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that require targeted agricultural extension education and climate information services. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, climate and environmental agencies, government agricultural institutions, research organisations, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist stakeholders in designing appropriate climate education and extension programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of climate-related agricultural risks. It may also support the development of relevant information services that help farmers understand changing production conditions and make informed agricultural decisions. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of climate change effects is important for farmers’ understanding of current and emerging challenges in crop production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen climate-related farmer education, awareness programmes, field training, and dissemination of timely agricultural information. Extension programmes should provide clear information on temperature and rainfall changes, drought, flooding, pest and disease pressures, soil moisture, crop stress, and changing production periods to improve farmers’ knowledge and support sustainable crop production.
