Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Crop Recovery Following Drought Conditions

Abstract

Drought is an important agricultural challenge that can negatively affect crop growth, yield, soil moisture, and farm income. Prolonged periods of inadequate rainfall may cause crop water stress, delayed growth, wilting, poor development, and, in severe cases, crop failure. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate crop recovery practices is important for helping them manage affected crops, restore productivity, and reduce further losses after drought conditions. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information and practical guidance on suitable recovery practices for drought-affected crops. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of crop recovery following drought conditions. The study will examine farmers’ understanding of appropriate practices for restoring drought-affected crops and maintaining production after periods of water shortage. It will also assess farmers’ knowledge of crop management decisions, soil moisture restoration, irrigation practices, nutrient management, replanting, and other measures that may support crop recovery after drought. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of drought effects on crops, crop recovery practices, soil moisture conservation, supplemental irrigation, mulching, nutrient management, replanting decisions, crop thinning, pest management, crop monitoring, and post-drought farm management. Attention will also be given to farmers’ sources of information on drought recovery and their access to agricultural extension advice concerning the management of drought-affected crops. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of crop recovery following drought conditions. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used to examine differences in farmers’ knowledge levels based on relevant characteristics and information sources. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of crop recovery practices following drought conditions. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic recovery practices, while others may have limited knowledge of appropriate decisions concerning irrigation, soil moisture restoration, nutrient application, replanting, and crop monitoring. The study may also reveal gaps in farmers’ access to timely and reliable information needed to support effective crop recovery after drought. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, irrigation authorities, climate information providers, non-governmental organizations, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for developing extension programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge of drought recovery practices and improve their ability to manage drought-affected crops. The study may also support the development of practical advisory materials for farmers facing water-related production challenges. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of crop recovery practices is important for enabling farmers to manage drought-affected crops and reduce potential production losses. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education on post-drought crop management, provide timely technical advice on appropriate recovery practices, and promote practical methods of restoring soil moisture and supporting crop recovery following drought conditions.
