Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Crop Water Requirement Estimation
Abstract
Crop water requirement estimation involves determining the amount of water needed by a crop to support healthy growth and development throughout its production cycle. Accurate estimation is important for effective irrigation scheduling, efficient water allocation, reduction of water losses, and improved crop production. Farmers’ knowledge of crop water requirements can therefore support better irrigation decisions and contribute to the sustainable management of agricultural water resources. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of crop water requirement estimation. The study will examine farmers’ understanding of the factors that influence crop water requirements and assess their knowledge of methods used to determine the quantity and timing of water needed by different crops. It will also determine the extent to which farmers understand the relationship between crop growth stages, weather conditions, soil characteristics, and irrigation water requirements. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of crop water requirements, crop growth stages, evapotranspiration, rainfall contribution, soil moisture, temperature, crop type, planting period, irrigation frequency, and estimation of irrigation water needs. It will also consider farmers’ sources of information on crop water requirements and their exposure to agricultural extension education, irrigation training, and technical advisory services related to water requirement estimation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of crop water requirement estimation. The data will be analysed using frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ knowledge levels and identify specific areas of knowledge gaps. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding crop water requirement estimation. Farmers may demonstrate greater knowledge of basic irrigation needs while showing gaps in areas such as evapotranspiration, crop water requirements at different growth stages, rainfall contribution, soil moisture assessment, and estimation of irrigation frequency. The study may also indicate that farmers’ access to extension information, irrigation experience, technical training, and use of weather information are associated with their knowledge of crop water requirement estimation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation authorities, agricultural development organizations, water-resource management agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for identifying areas where farmers require additional education and technical support on crop water requirement estimation. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ ability to estimate crop water needs and make appropriate irrigation decisions. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of crop water requirement estimation is important for effective irrigation management because adequate knowledge can support appropriate water application and reduce unnecessary water losses. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and irrigation authorities strengthen farmer education on crop water requirements, evapotranspiration, growth-stage water needs, soil moisture assessment, rainfall contribution, and irrigation scheduling to promote efficient and sustainable agricultural water management.
