Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Cucumber Production Technologies
Abstract
Cucumber is an important vegetable crop that contributes to household nutrition, income generation, employment, and agricultural diversification. Its relatively short production cycle and demand in local markets make it an important crop for smallholder farmers. However, successful cucumber production depends on farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate production technologies. Inadequate knowledge of improved technologies may affect crop establishment, growth, yield, quality, and profitability. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of cucumber production technologies is therefore important for identifying knowledge gaps and improving production outcomes. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of cucumber production technologies. It will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of recommended cucumber production technologies and identify areas where knowledge gaps exist. The study will also examine farmers’ sources of information and their exposure to agricultural extension services, training programmes, demonstrations, and advisory activities related to cucumber production. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of improved cucumber varieties, seed selection and treatment, land preparation, nursery management, planting methods, spacing, fertilizer application, irrigation and water management, staking and trellising, weed control, pest and disease management, pollination, harvesting, sorting, and post-harvest handling. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension agents, agricultural information, demonstration farms, input suppliers, and other sources of technical knowledge on cucumber production technologies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from cucumber farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of recommended production technologies and sources of production information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, frequency distributions, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to examine factors associated with farmers’ knowledge of cucumber production technologies. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among cucumber farmers regarding improved production technologies. Farmers with greater access to extension services, training, practical demonstrations, and reliable agricultural information may demonstrate better knowledge of seed selection, crop establishment, nutrient management, irrigation, staking, pest and disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest practices. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps relating to the selection and application of improved cucumber production technologies. The study will be useful to cucumber farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, horticultural organisations, research institutions, policymakers, input suppliers, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders involved in vegetable production. It may provide useful information for identifying farmers’ technical knowledge needs and strengthening extension education programmes. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in designing practical training and demonstration activities aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge of cucumber production technologies. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of cucumber production technologies is important for effective crop management and improved vegetable production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, advisory visits, and dissemination of relevant information on improved cucumber production technologies. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate in extension programmes and gain access to appropriate production inputs and technologies to improve crop performance, product quality, and farm productivity.
