Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Genetically Improved Crop Varieties

Abstract

Genetically improved crop varieties are developed through advanced breeding and biotechnology techniques to introduce or enhance desirable characteristics such as improved yield, resistance to pests and diseases, tolerance to environmental stresses, and improved crop quality. These varieties can contribute to agricultural productivity and food security when appropriately developed, distributed, and managed. Farmers’ knowledge of genetically improved crop varieties is important because adequate understanding can support informed decisions concerning their characteristics, benefits, sources, and appropriate use in crop production. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of genetically improved crop varieties. The study will determine farmers’ level of awareness and understanding of genetically improved varieties and examine their knowledge of their characteristics, potential benefits, production requirements, and sources of planting materials. It will also identify areas where farmers may require additional agricultural information and extension support to improve their understanding of these crop varieties. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of the meaning and characteristics of genetically improved crop varieties, reasons for their development, potential yield advantages, pest and disease resistance, environmental stress tolerance, crop quality characteristics, availability, sources of planting materials, and appropriate production practices. It will also examine farmers’ sources of information about genetically improved varieties, including agricultural extension agents, research institutions, farmer organisations, input suppliers, media platforms, training programmes, and other agricultural information channels. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of genetically improved crop varieties. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate statistical techniques may be used to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and examine variations associated with relevant farmer characteristics and sources of agricultural information. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of genetically improved crop varieties. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services, training programmes, research institutions, and reliable agricultural information may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. However, limited extension contact, inadequate information, misconceptions, insufficient practical education, limited access to quality planting materials, and concerns about the characteristics and management of genetically improved varieties may contribute to knowledge gaps among some farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, plant breeders, agricultural biotechnologists, research institutions, seed producers, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on farmers’ understanding of genetically improved crop varieties and identify specific knowledge gaps that can be addressed through agricultural education and advisory programmes. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing clear and accessible information materials and farmer training programmes on improved crop varieties. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of genetically improved crop varieties is important for farmers to make informed decisions about their use and management in crop production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant research institutions strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, workshops, field days, training programmes, and accessible information materials. Farmers should also be provided with reliable and understandable information on the characteristics, benefits, sources, and appropriate management of genetically improved crop varieties to support informed agricultural decision-making.
