Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Habitat Management for Natural Pest Control

Abstract

Habitat management for natural pest control involves the deliberate management of farm vegetation, field margins, flowering plants, hedgerows, and other ecological features to provide suitable conditions for beneficial organisms that naturally regulate agricultural pests. Farmers’ knowledge of these practices is important because proper habitat management can support biological pest control, reduce dependence on chemical pesticides, and contribute to sustainable agricultural production. Assessing farmers’ knowledge can therefore provide useful information for identifying gaps in their understanding and improving agricultural extension interventions. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of habitat management for natural pest control. It will examine farmers’ understanding of the relationship between farm habitats and natural pest regulation and determine their knowledge of practices that encourage the presence and activity of beneficial insects and other natural enemies of agricultural pests. The study will also identify areas where farmers may require additional technical information and extension support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of habitat management, natural pest control, beneficial insects, natural enemies, flowering plants, field margins, hedgerows, vegetation conservation, habitat diversification, pest regulation, biological control, and sustainable crop protection. Attention will be given to farmers’ knowledge of how maintaining suitable vegetation and ecological features around farms can provide food, shelter, breeding sites, and favourable conditions for beneficial organisms that contribute to natural pest control. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires containing knowledge-based questions on habitat management and natural pest control practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to assess farmers’ levels of knowledge and identify variations in knowledge across relevant farmer characteristics. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of habitat management for natural pest control. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of beneficial insects, vegetation conservation, and field margin management, while others may have limited understanding of how habitat features support natural pest regulation. The study may also reveal knowledge gaps concerning habitat diversification, maintenance of flowering plants, and conservation of natural enemies of agricultural pests. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, crop protection specialists, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide information for designing extension education programmes that address identified knowledge gaps and promote environmentally sustainable pest management. The findings may also support the development of practical demonstrations and farmer training activities on habitat management and natural pest control. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is an important consideration in promoting habitat management for natural pest control. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, demonstrations, field visits, and advisory services on beneficial organisms, habitat conservation, field margin management, and other ecological pest management practices. Farmers should be encouraged to improve their knowledge and application of suitable habitat management practices to support effective natural pest control and sustainable agricultural production.
