Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Improved Livestock Management Practices

Abstract

Improved livestock management practices are important for enhancing animal health, productivity, welfare, and the profitability of livestock enterprises. Farmers require adequate knowledge of appropriate management techniques to maintain healthy animals, reduce production losses, and improve the quality and quantity of livestock products. However, differences in farmers’ access to agricultural information, training, and technical guidance may influence their understanding of recommended livestock management practices. Assessing farmers’ knowledge is therefore important for identifying areas of strength and gaps that may require further extension support. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of improved livestock management practices. The study will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of recommended practices used in livestock production and management. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of appropriate techniques for maintaining animal health, nutrition, housing, breeding, hygiene, and general herd or flock management. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of improved livestock feeding, provision of clean water, housing and sanitation, animal identification, breeding management, disease prevention, vaccination, parasite control, routine health monitoring, proper handling of animals, waste management, and biosecurity practices. Knowledge of appropriate livestock housing, feeding schedules, animal hygiene, early identification of health problems, and the use of veterinary services will also be assessed. The study will identify areas where farmers demonstrate adequate knowledge and areas where knowledge gaps exist. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment items covering major aspects of improved livestock management. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation analysis may be used to examine relationships between selected farmer characteristics and knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of improved livestock management practices. Farmers may demonstrate relatively good knowledge of basic feeding, watering, housing, and routine animal care practices, while knowledge gaps may occur in areas such as disease prevention, vaccination schedules, biosecurity, breeding management, and proper waste disposal. The findings may also indicate areas where additional agricultural extension education and technical guidance are required. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinary professionals, livestock development agencies, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for designing targeted livestock extension programmes and training activities. It may also assist relevant agricultural agencies in identifying specific knowledge gaps and developing practical educational interventions to strengthen farmers’ livestock management skills. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of improved livestock management practices is essential for effective livestock production and sustainable farm management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on improved livestock management. Extension programmes should give particular attention to identified knowledge gaps in animal health, nutrition, breeding, hygiene, biosecurity, and disease prevention to support improved livestock productivity and farmer livelihoods.
