Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Irrigation Water Distribution Management

Abstract

Irrigation water distribution management involves the planning, allocation, and controlled delivery of water to different sections of farmland to ensure that crops receive adequate water at the appropriate time and in the required quantity. Effective management of irrigation water distribution is important for improving water-use efficiency, supporting crop growth, reducing water losses, and promoting sustainable agricultural production. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate water distribution practices is therefore essential for effective irrigation management, particularly in areas where water resources are limited. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water distribution management. The study will examine farmers’ understanding of water allocation, irrigation scheduling, distribution channels, water measurement, field-level water application, and methods of reducing water losses during irrigation. It will also determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of practices used to ensure uniform and efficient distribution of irrigation water across cultivated fields. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water allocation, irrigation scheduling, water distribution methods, canal and pipeline management, field water application, water measurement, control of water flow, prevention of water losses, and maintenance of irrigation distribution facilities. It will also consider farmers’ sources of information on irrigation water management and their exposure to agricultural extension services related to efficient water distribution practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected irrigation farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of irrigation water distribution management. The data will be analysed using frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ levels of knowledge and identify patterns in their understanding of irrigation water distribution practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding irrigation water distribution management. Farmers may demonstrate better knowledge of basic irrigation practices while showing gaps in areas such as water measurement, equitable water allocation, flow control, irrigation scheduling, and prevention of distribution losses. The study may also indicate that access to agricultural extension information, farming experience, irrigation experience, and participation in irrigation management activities are associated with farmers’ knowledge of effective water distribution practices. The study will be useful to irrigation farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation authorities, water management agencies, agricultural development organizations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for identifying knowledge gaps that can be addressed through extension education and practical irrigation management programmes. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in designing farmer-oriented interventions aimed at improving efficient and sustainable irrigation water distribution. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water distribution management is an important component of efficient irrigation farming because adequate knowledge can support appropriate allocation, distribution, and utilization of available water resources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and irrigation management authorities strengthen farmer education on water distribution techniques, irrigation scheduling, water measurement, flow control, and maintenance of distribution facilities to improve water-use efficiency and sustainable agricultural production.
