Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Livestock Quarantine Practices

Abstract

Livestock quarantine is an important animal health management practice used to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases within and between livestock populations. Proper quarantine measures can help farmers identify potentially infected animals, reduce disease transmission, protect healthy livestock, and minimize production losses. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate quarantine practices is therefore important for maintaining livestock health and supporting safe and sustainable animal production. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of livestock quarantine practices. The study will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of the purpose, procedures, and importance of quarantining newly acquired or potentially exposed animals. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of recommended quarantine measures and identify the major sources of information that contribute to their knowledge of livestock quarantine practices. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of isolation of newly introduced animals, appropriate quarantine periods, observation of animals for signs of disease, separation of sick and healthy animals, sanitation of quarantine facilities, restricted movement of animals and farm personnel, disinfection of equipment, provision of separate feeding and watering facilities, and appropriate veterinary examination during quarantine. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of record-keeping and reporting procedures associated with livestock quarantine. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of livestock quarantine practices. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine farmers’ knowledge levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics, access to veterinary services, extension contact, sources of information, and knowledge of quarantine practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of livestock quarantine practices. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of animal isolation, disease observation, sanitation, and movement control, while others may have limited understanding of recommended quarantine procedures and duration. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate veterinary support, limited extension information, lack of suitable quarantine facilities, high management costs, and insufficient awareness of disease prevention measures. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinarians, livestock development agencies, farmers’ associations, animal health authorities, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in livestock disease prevention. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening farmer education and improving awareness of quarantine practices as part of livestock disease control and biosecurity programmes. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of livestock quarantine practices is important for preventing disease transmission and protecting livestock health. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and veterinary agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, and accessible animal health information. Farmers should also be encouraged to isolate newly introduced or potentially exposed animals, observe appropriate quarantine procedures, maintain proper sanitation, and seek veterinary guidance to support effective livestock disease prevention.
