Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Participatory Seed Multiplication Techniques

Abstract

Participatory seed multiplication involves the active involvement of farmers and other local stakeholders in producing, selecting, maintaining, and multiplying quality planting materials within farming communities. These techniques can improve farmers’ access to suitable seeds, strengthen local seed systems, preserve desirable crop varieties, and promote farmer participation in seed production activities. Farmers’ knowledge of participatory seed multiplication techniques is therefore important for ensuring effective production and maintenance of quality planting materials at the community level. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of participatory seed multiplication techniques. It will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of different seed multiplication practices, examine their understanding of the principles and procedures involved in participatory seed production, and assess their knowledge of selecting suitable planting materials, maintaining seed quality, and multiplying seeds under local farming conditions. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of seed selection, field preparation, planting material multiplication, varietal maintenance, isolation practices, rouging, crop monitoring, harvesting, seed processing, drying, storage, and quality control. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of collective seed production, farmer participation in seed multiplication activities, community-based seed management, record keeping, and the sharing of seed production information among participating farmers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of participatory seed multiplication techniques and related practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and identify specific areas of knowledge gaps. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding participatory seed multiplication techniques. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic seed selection, planting, harvesting, and storage practices, while others may have limited knowledge of technical activities such as varietal maintenance, isolation, rouging, quality control, and systematic seed multiplication. The study may also identify areas where farmers require additional technical information and practical training. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, community seed organisations, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for developing extension education programmes that strengthen farmers’ knowledge and participation in community-based seed multiplication. The findings may also assist in improving access to quality planting materials, supporting local seed systems, and preserving desirable crop varieties. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of participatory seed multiplication techniques is important for strengthening farmer involvement in the production and maintenance of quality planting materials. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension services provide practical training on seed selection, field management, varietal maintenance, isolation, rouging, harvesting, processing, storage, and quality control to improve farmers’ capacity to participate effectively in seed multiplication activities.
