Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Seed Quality Maintenance

Abstract

Seed quality maintenance involves the application of appropriate practices for preserving the physical, physiological, genetic, and health characteristics of seeds from production and storage until planting. Maintaining seed quality is important because high-quality seeds contribute to good germination, vigorous seedling development, uniform crop establishment, and improved agricultural productivity. Practices such as proper seed selection, cleaning, drying, treatment, packaging, storage, pest control, moisture management, and appropriate handling are essential for preserving seed quality. Farmers’ knowledge of these practices is therefore important for reducing seed deterioration and improving crop production outcomes. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of seed quality maintenance. The study will determine the level of knowledge farmers possess regarding recommended practices for maintaining seed quality and identify specific areas where knowledge gaps may exist. It will also examine farmers’ sources of information on seed quality maintenance and their access to agricultural extension services, training programmes, demonstrations, and other technical information related to seed handling and storage. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of seed selection, seed cleaning, drying, seed treatment, moisture control, packaging, storage conditions, pest and insect control, protection from contamination, storage duration, seed testing, and proper handling practices. Attention will also be given to farmers’ knowledge of identifying good-quality seeds, recognizing signs of seed deterioration, maintaining appropriate storage environments, and protecting stored seeds from factors that can reduce viability and germination capacity. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of seed quality maintenance practices and sources of seed-related information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine factors associated with farmers’ knowledge of seed quality maintenance. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding seed quality maintenance practices. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension education, practical demonstrations, training programmes, and reliable seed information may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to seed drying, treatment, moisture control, packaging, storage, pest management, and seed testing. Challenges such as inadequate extension contact, poor storage facilities, limited access to quality seed information, high cost of appropriate storage materials, and limited technical knowledge may also be identified. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, seed companies, agricultural development agencies, farmer associations, government institutions, researchers, and policymakers. The findings may assist in developing targeted extension programmes and training activities aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge of seed quality maintenance. Improved knowledge may contribute to better seed storage, reduced seed losses and deterioration, improved germination, better crop establishment, and increased agricultural productivity. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of seed quality maintenance is important for preserving seed viability and supporting successful crop production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, training programmes, farm visits, and accessible advisory services on seed handling and storage. Farmers should also be supported with timely technical information, appropriate storage facilities, quality packaging materials, and improved access to reliable seed quality management resources.
