Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Temperature Control During Produce Storage
Abstract
Temperature control is an important aspect of agricultural produce storage because appropriate storage temperatures help maintain the quality, freshness, safety, and market value of farm produce. Perishable commodities such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and other fresh agricultural products are particularly sensitive to unsuitable temperature conditions. Inadequate knowledge of temperature control may contribute to accelerated deterioration, microbial growth, moisture loss, and postharvest losses. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of temperature control during produce storage is therefore important for improving postharvest management practices. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of temperature control during produce storage. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of appropriate temperature requirements for different categories of agricultural produce, assess their understanding of temperature monitoring methods, and identify the storage practices commonly used to maintain suitable temperature conditions. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the effects of inappropriate temperatures on the quality and shelf life of stored agricultural produce. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of temperature control, produce storage, temperature requirements, temperature monitoring, storage facilities, ventilation, cooling practices, refrigeration, evaporative cooling, heat management, cold storage, produce quality, shelf life, postharvest losses, and storage management. Information will be obtained from farmers involved in the production and storage of perishable agricultural produce to determine their understanding of appropriate temperature management practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation checklists. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to determine farmers’ levels of understanding, while relevant inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of temperature control during produce storage. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding temperature control during produce storage. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic cooling, ventilation, and storage practices, while others may have limited understanding of appropriate temperature ranges, temperature monitoring equipment, refrigeration, and other cooling technologies. The study may also identify knowledge gaps that contribute to poor storage conditions, reduced shelf life, and increased postharvest losses of agricultural produce. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, postharvest management organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for designing farmer education and extension programmes on temperature management and improved storage practices. The findings may also assist stakeholders in promoting affordable temperature-control technologies and practical storage methods suitable for farmers handling perishable agricultural produce. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of temperature control is important for effective storage and preservation of agricultural produce. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education on appropriate storage temperatures, temperature monitoring, cooling methods, ventilation, refrigeration, and other temperature-management practices. Practical demonstrations and training on the use of simple temperature-monitoring devices and suitable storage technologies should also be promoted to improve produce quality and reduce postharvest losses.
