Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Tissue Culture Technology in Crop Production
Abstract
Tissue culture technology is an important agricultural biotechnology technique used for the rapid multiplication of healthy, uniform, and disease-free planting materials. The technology can support the production of quality planting materials, improve the availability of improved crop varieties, and contribute to increased productivity in crops such as banana, plantain, cassava, potato, and other vegetatively propagated crops. Farmers’ knowledge of tissue culture technology is important because adequate understanding can influence their ability to recognise its benefits, obtain tissue-cultured planting materials, and apply appropriate production practices. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of tissue culture technology in crop production. The study will determine farmers’ level of awareness and understanding of tissue culture technology and examine their knowledge of its applications and potential benefits in agricultural production. It will also identify areas where farmers may require additional agricultural information and extension support to improve their understanding of tissue culture technology. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of the meaning and principles of tissue culture, production of disease-free planting materials, rapid multiplication of crops, characteristics of tissue-cultured seedlings, sources of tissue-cultured planting materials, hardening and establishment of plantlets, handling and management of tissue-cultured plants, and potential benefits and limitations of the technology. It will also examine farmers’ sources of information about tissue culture, including agricultural extension agents, research institutions, farmer organisations, input suppliers, training programmes, and other agricultural information channels. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their awareness and knowledge of tissue culture technology in crop production. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate statistical techniques may be used to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and examine differences associated with relevant farmer characteristics and sources of agricultural information. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of tissue culture technology. Farmers who have greater exposure to agricultural extension services, training programmes, research institutions, and improved planting material information may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. However, limited awareness, inadequate extension contact, lack of practical demonstrations, limited access to tissue-cultured planting materials, high perceived cost, and insufficient information about the technology may contribute to low levels of knowledge among some farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural biotechnologists, plant breeders, research institutions, seed and planting material producers, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information on farmers’ understanding of tissue culture technology and identify knowledge gaps that can be addressed through agricultural education and advisory programmes. The findings may also support the development of practical farmer training and information materials on the use and management of tissue-cultured planting materials. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of tissue culture technology is important for improving farmers’ understanding and potential use of quality planting materials in crop production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant research institutions strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, field training, workshops, and accessible information materials on tissue culture technology. Farmers should also be provided with reliable information on the benefits, sources, handling, establishment, and management of tissue-cultured planting materials to encourage informed use of the technology.
