Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Water-Efficient Agricultural Practices

Abstract

Water-efficient agricultural practices are important for improving the productive use of water and reducing unnecessary losses in farming activities. Efficient water management can help farmers maintain crop production, especially in areas where water resources are limited or where rainfall patterns are irregular. Practices such as irrigation scheduling, drip irrigation, mulching, rainwater harvesting, soil moisture conservation, appropriate irrigation methods, and the use of water-saving technologies can contribute to more effective agricultural water management. Farmers’ knowledge of these practices is therefore important for promoting efficient use of available water resources. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of water-efficient agricultural practices. It will examine farmers’ awareness and understanding of recommended practices for conserving and efficiently using water in agricultural production. The study will also determine farmers’ ability to identify, explain, and apply appropriate water-efficient practices and assess the major sources through which they obtain information about agricultural water management. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of practices such as irrigation scheduling, drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, mulching, rainwater harvesting, soil moisture conservation, water storage, appropriate irrigation timing, and the use of improved water management technologies. Areas of assessment will include knowledge of water-saving methods, appropriate application procedures, benefits of efficient water use, maintenance of water management equipment, and methods of reducing water losses on farms. Farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services, training, demonstrations, and water management information will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to determine farmers’ levels of awareness and knowledge of water-efficient agricultural practices. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to extension information and their knowledge of water-efficient agricultural practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding water-efficient agricultural practices. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services, practical training, irrigation information, and demonstrations may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge than farmers with limited exposure. The study may also reveal that farmers have greater knowledge of traditional water management practices than newer technologies such as drip irrigation, soil moisture monitoring, and other water-saving systems. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation agencies, agricultural development organizations, water resource managers, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for identifying knowledge gaps and improving agricultural extension programmes on efficient water management. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in developing practical training and demonstration activities that promote appropriate water conservation and efficient irrigation practices among farmers. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of water-efficient agricultural practices is important for promoting sustainable water management and maintaining agricultural productivity. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular training, demonstrations, and advisory services on water-saving practices and technologies. Extension programmes should also promote simple, affordable, and locally appropriate water management techniques that farmers can understand and apply effectively to reduce water losses and improve agricultural production.
