Assessment of Farmers’ Use of Agricultural Commodity Market Information
Abstract
Agricultural commodity market information provides farmers with useful knowledge about prevailing prices, market demand, supply conditions, buyers, quality requirements, market locations, and other factors that influence the sale of agricultural products. Access to and effective use of such information can support farmers in making informed production and marketing decisions, negotiating prices, selecting suitable markets, and improving the timing of produce sales. Assessing farmers’ use of agricultural commodity market information is therefore important for understanding how market information contributes to agricultural marketing activities and farmers’ participation in commodity markets. This study will assess farmers’ use of agricultural commodity market information. It will determine the extent to which farmers access and use market information when making decisions concerning the production and marketing of agricultural commodities. The study will also examine the major sources of commodity market information available to farmers, the frequency with which such information is accessed, and the ways in which farmers apply the information to their marketing activities. The study will focus on farmers’ use of information on commodity prices, market demand, supply levels, buyers, market locations, quality standards, transportation costs, prevailing market conditions, and expected price changes. It will examine the use of information for selecting markets, determining when to sell produce, negotiating prices, choosing buyers, planning production, comparing market opportunities, and deciding how much produce to take to different markets. Sources such as agricultural extension agents, farmer organisations, radio, television, mobile phones, social media, traders, cooperatives, and digital agricultural platforms will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to, sources of, frequency of use, and application of agricultural commodity market information. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine relationships between relevant factors and farmers’ use of commodity market information. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of use of agricultural commodity market information among farmers. Farmers with regular access to extension services, mobile communication, farmer organisations, market networks, and digital information platforms may demonstrate greater use of commodity market information in their marketing decisions. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate access to timely information, unreliable information sources, poor network connectivity, limited digital literacy, language barriers, and difficulties in interpreting market information as constraints affecting effective use. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, commodity traders, farmer organisations, agricultural marketing agencies, government institutions, policymakers, digital agricultural information providers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information on how farmers access and apply market information in making agricultural marketing decisions. Extension agents and agricultural development organisations may use the findings to strengthen market information dissemination, while digital platforms and other information providers may use the information to improve the accessibility, timeliness, and relevance of commodity market information. The study concludes that effective use of agricultural commodity market information can support farmers in making informed production and marketing decisions and improving their participation in agricultural markets. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant stakeholders strengthen market information services through regular advisory contacts, mobile communication, radio programmes, farmer organisations, and digital platforms. Efforts should also be made to provide farmers with timely, accurate, affordable, and easily understandable commodity market information to improve their marketing decisions and market participation.
