Assessment of Fish Farmers’ Knowledge of Fish Sorting and Handling
Abstract
Fish sorting and handling are important post-harvest activities that influence the quality, safety, shelf life, and market value of fish products. Proper sorting helps fish farmers separate fish according to size, quality, species, and condition, while appropriate handling reduces physical damage, contamination, spoilage, and post-harvest losses. Adequate knowledge of these practices is therefore essential for maintaining the quality of fish from harvesting to processing and marketing. This study will assess fish farmers’ knowledge of fish sorting and handling practices. The study will assess the level of knowledge possessed by fish farmers regarding appropriate fish sorting and handling procedures. It will examine their knowledge of sorting criteria, hygienic handling, use of appropriate containers, fish cleaning, temperature control, transportation, storage, and prevention of contamination. The study will also identify the sources of information from which fish farmers obtain knowledge about fish sorting and handling practices. The study will focus on fish sorting knowledge, fish handling knowledge, sorting criteria, fish quality assessment, hygiene practices, handling equipment, fish cleaning, temperature management, storage practices, transportation practices, contamination prevention, and post-harvest loss management. Information will be obtained on farmers’ understanding and application of recommended procedures during fish harvesting, sorting, handling, storage, and marketing. The study will also examine challenges that may limit farmers’ ability to apply appropriate sorting and handling practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from fish farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their knowledge of fish sorting and handling practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Where appropriate, inferential statistics such as chi-square and correlation analysis may be used to examine relationships between selected farmer characteristics, sources of information, and knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal differences in fish farmers’ knowledge of various sorting and handling practices. It may show that farmers have relatively better knowledge of basic sorting and handling procedures but may have limited knowledge of temperature control, hygienic handling, appropriate storage, contamination prevention, and quality preservation techniques. The findings may also indicate that access to extension information, training, experience, and availability of appropriate handling facilities influence farmers’ knowledge of recommended practices. The study will be useful to fish farmers, agricultural extension agents, fisheries development agencies, aquaculture organisations, food safety authorities, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for identifying knowledge gaps among fish farmers and improving extension programmes on fish post-harvest management. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical training and advisory interventions aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and improving the quality and market value of fish products. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of fish sorting and handling practices is important for effective post-harvest management and preservation of fish quality. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies and fisheries development organisations should strengthen farmers’ access to practical information and training on fish sorting, hygienic handling, storage, transportation, and quality preservation. Regular demonstrations and advisory services should also be provided to improve farmers’ knowledge and encourage the consistent application of recommended fish handling practices.
